Museums in Rio de Janeiro: hours, free days and what's on
Most of Rio's big museums sit in Centro and around Praça Mauá, within walking distance of each other, and many are free every day: the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Historical Museum, CCBB, MAM Rio and Paço Imperial among them. Plan around the closing days: the Museum of Tomorrow closes on Wednesdays, CCBB on Tuesdays. All hours, statuses and prices below come from the museums' own pages, checked on 29.10.2026.

Frequently asked questions
Which museums in Rio are free?
On their own pages, MNBA, the National Historical Museum, Museu da República, Chácara do Céu, CCBB, MAM Rio, Paço Imperial, Centro Cultural Correios, Museu Naval and Casa Eva Klabin say entry is free. The Navy Cultural Space is free on Tuesdays.
Which museums are closed on Monday?
Many: MNBA, the National Historical Museum, Museu da República, MAM Rio, Casa de Rui Barbosa and Museu do Samba among them. The Museum of Tomorrow and CCBB are open on Mondays.
Is the Museum of Tomorrow open on Wednesdays?
No. It opens Thursday to Tuesday, 10:00-18:00, holidays included, with last entry at 17:00.
Is the Museu Nacional open after the fire?
It is under restoration. On 29.10.2026 its site lists an exhibition for booked groups and temporary exhibitions in the palace at Quinta da Boa Vista. Check the museum's site for your date.
Is MAR open?
No. On 29.10.2026 MAR's official site says the museum is temporarily closed, with no reopening date.
Can we see several museums in one day?
Yes. The Museum of Tomorrow is on Praça Mauá (MAR, across the square, is temporarily closed), and CCBB, Paço Imperial and the National Historical Museum are a short walk away near Praça XV.
Do we need tickets in advance?
For CCBB you need a free ticket from its site or box office; new dates open on Mondays. The Museum of Tomorrow sells timed tickets. MIS Copacabana works by booking on Sympla. Most others sell at the door or are free.
What about museums outside Rio?
The Imperial Museum in Petrópolis is free on Sundays and closed on Mondays. Niterói has the MAC; see our Niterói page.
