Ipanema is a beach and a residential district, and it even has a birthday: April 26. In 2026 it turned 132, according to Visit Rio. Visitors come for the beach, the sunset and the Sunday fair, and many stay here for the whole trip.
Ipanema Beach: lifeguard posts and Posto 9
Riotur gives the beach 2 km, from Arpoador to Jardim de Alah. Leblon continues to the west, and Copacabana lies to the east, past the rocks. Visit Rio points out that from the sand you see the Dois Irmãos hill, the Cagarras Islands and even Corcovado.
Numbered lifeguard posts stand along the beach, and the numbers make it easy to agree on a meeting point. Riotur describes the stretch around Posto 9 as the main meeting spot, especially for young people and visitors.
What people do on the beach:
- Sport. Riotur lists surfing, frescobol, volleyball, football and futevôlei (football played over a volleyball net).
- Surfing at Arpoador, where there are waves in summer and winter.
- Beach food. Visit Rio mentions corn, esfihas, Biscoito Globo crackers with iced mate, and açaí. If you pay by card, check the amount on the terminal first.
- Swimming only near a lifeguard post and never under a red flag. Rio state firefighters add: no alcohol before swimming, stay away from the rocks and do not swim at night.
Arpoador and the sunset
Arpoador lies between Copacabana Fort and Ipanema Beach. Its own beach is short, about 800 m to the corner of Rua Francisco Otaviano and Avenida Vieira Souto. Above it rises the Pedra do Arpoador, which Riotur calls the best place to watch the sea and the sunset. When the sun goes down, people on the rocks applaud, and Riotur says the clapping spreads along the sand of Ipanema too.
On January 3, 2026, Rio City Hall introduced night rules for Arpoador:
- the rock works like a park: it opens at 4:00 and closes at 21:00;
- the neighbouring Parque Garota de Ipanema closes daily at 20:00;
- loudspeakers are banned, and only authorized commercial and cultural activities may take place.
Hours can change in high season, so check them before you go, or let us check them for your dates.
The Girl from Ipanema
Riotur credits the song ‘Garota de Ipanema’ by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes with making the beach famous around the world. The park next to Arpoador carries the same name.
Sundays: Hippie Fair and a seafront closed to cars
The Feira Hippie de Ipanema started in 1968, according to Visit Rio, which calls it the city’s largest arts and crafts fair and notes its status as intangible heritage of Rio. It began with artists selling paintings on the square, and Riotur now counts more than 600 exhibitors.
- When: every Sunday. Riotur lists 9:00 to 18:00, Visit Rio 8:00 to 18:00.
- Where: Praça General Osório. Exit A of General Osório metro station opens onto the square.
On Sundays the seafront lanes close to cars until 18:00 and become a leisure area, Riotur notes. It is a good day to walk from Arpoador to Leblon.
Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas
The lagoon is close by: MetrôRio lists it among the places near General Osório station (exit E is signed Lagoa) and gives its cycle path as 7.8 km, with kiosks along the water. In the evening it is a good alternative to the beach for a walk or a bike ride.
