Top things to do in Rio de Janeiro
In 2012 UNESCO put the city’s setting between mountains and sea on the World Heritage list. Most first visits follow that list: Corcovado with the Christ statue, Sugarloaf, the Copacabana waterfront, the Botanical Garden, Flamengo Park and the Tijuca forest that climbs above the city. Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf are best on separate half days, and the beaches fit around them. If you only have three days, see our Rio itinerary, which puts these sights in a sensible order by area.

Frequently asked questions
What are the top things to do in Rio de Janeiro?
Christ the Redeemer, the Sugarloaf cable car, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Tijuca Forest and the Botanical Garden. UNESCO lists all of them in the World Heritage site Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea, inscribed in 2012.
How do you get up to Christ the Redeemer?
By the Corcovado train, which runs every day from 8:00 to 18:00 every twenty minutes, or by the official vans from Copacabana, Largo do Machado or the Metropolitan Cathedral. Until the end of May 2027 the escalators at the top are being replaced, so everyone climbs the last 80 steps.
When is the rainy season in Rio?
The UK Foreign Office gives roughly November to March for south-east Brazil, Rio included. Heavy rain can still happen in other months.
Can you plan our days in Rio?
Yes. We build the plan, book a private guide who speaks your language or a driver, and send a proposal within 24 hours. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm.
