UNESCO describes the falls as a semicircle about 2.7 km wide, with drops of up to 80 m. The Brazilian park has been on the World Heritage list since 1986, and the Argentine park on the other bank is listed too.

Iguazu Falls from Rio: how the trip works

There is no sensible road trip from Rio, so the trip starts with a domestic flight to Foz do Iguaçu. You buy the flights, or tell us which ones you already have, and we build the rest around them:

  • pickup at Foz do Iguaçu airport and transfer to your hotel;
  • a day in the Brazilian park with a private guide, tickets booked for your entry time;
  • if you want, a day on the Argentine side as an excursion with a driver and guide;
  • the transfer back to the airport, timed to your flight.

If you prefer public transport, city bus 120 (line Parque Nacional-Aeroporto) runs from the urban terminal in Foz do Iguaçu to the park and stops at the airport. In Rio we can add the airport transfer on both ends.

The Brazilian side: Parque Nacional do Iguaçu

This is the part of the trip we organize in full. The visitor center is on highway BR-469, km 18. Your ticket includes the park bus, a round trip of about 12 km to the start of the Trilha das Cataratas. The trail itself is about 1 km on foot, with viewpoints along the way, and the classic visit takes around two hours.

What the park publishes about tickets and hours:

  • Tickets are sold only online, with a date and an entry time. You show them on your phone, and every visitor shows a photo ID.
  • You can change the date or time twice before the first use, if there is availability. An unused ticket is not refunded.
  • Entry is 9:00-16:00 on weekdays and 8:30-16:00 at weekends; once inside, you can stay until the park closes at 17:30. The park opens every day of the year.
  • Park transport and the main viewpoints are accessible, and a wheelchair can be requested at the visitor center.
  • Pets are not allowed.

We pick the entry time with you. Early slots are quieter, and the light on the falls changes through the day.

A day on the Argentine side

From Foz do Iguaçu we can add a visit to the Argentine park, Parque Nacional Iguazú, as an excursion: a driver takes you across the border and back, and a guide walks the circuits with you. Inside the park there are walkway circuits above and below the falls, and the Tren Ecológico de la Selva runs from the central station toward the Garganta del Diablo station.

According to the park:

  • the falls area opens every day 8:00-18:00, holidays and rainy days included;
  • the circuits close to new visitors at 16:45;
  • the first train leaves at 8:20, the last one from the central station at 15:30, and the last train back from Garganta at 17:30.

Circuits can close for river levels or works, so we check what is open for your dates before we confirm the day. Bring your passport, and check entry requirements on official websites.

How many days and what to combine

  • Two nights in Foz do Iguaçu: one day on each side, without rushing.
  • Three nights: time for the dawn or evening programs the Brazilian park runs on separate tickets, or a slower day.
  • Iguazu fits well into a longer route: see our two-week Brazil itinerary, or add Curitiba, the capital of the same state.

Health and official advice

The CDC recommends the yellow fever vaccine for travelers going to Iguaçu Falls and reports no malaria there. Talk to your doctor in time.

The U.S. State Department keeps Brazil at Level 2 (advisory of 31.08.2026); its “do not travel” advice for land border areas excludes Foz do Iguaçu. The Government of Canada (page updated 14.10.2026) advises avoiding non-essential travel within 20 km of the border with Paraguay; Foz do Iguaçu is a city on that border. Read your own government’s advice before you book. Emergency numbers in Brazil: 190 (police), 192 (ambulance), 193 (fire brigade).

What to tell us in your request

  • your dates and how many nights you can give Iguazu
  • number of travelers and ages of children
  • flights, if you already have them
  • Brazilian side only, or both sides
  • the language your guide should speak
  • hotel style, or whether you have one booked
  • anything about mobility we should plan for

Our fee is already included in the price. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm. More about the way we plan private trips from Rio and how we work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Rio to Iguazu Falls?

By plane to Foz do Iguaçu, the city next to the Brazilian park. From there we take you to the park by private transfer; city bus 120 also links the airport, the city terminal and the park.

Can I see Iguazu Falls as a day trip from Rio?

It is possible with early and late flights, but it leaves only a few hours in the park. We suggest at least two nights in Foz do Iguaçu: one day for the Brazilian side and one for the Argentine side.

Which side is better, Brazil or Argentina?

They complement each other. The Brazilian trail gives the wide panorama in about two hours, while the Argentine park has several walkway circuits and usually takes a full day.

Do I need to buy park tickets in advance?

For the Brazilian park, yes: tickets are sold only online, for a set date and entry time. If tickets are part of your proposal, we book them for your dates.

How much does an Iguazu trip from Rio cost?

The price is on request, and our proposal arrives within 24 hours. You pay nothing before you confirm.
