Brazil travel guide

Best time to visit Brazil

There is no single best time to visit Brazil: it depends on the region. Rio and the south-east are wettest from November to March, the north-east coast from April to July, and the Pantanal and the centre are dry from May to September. December to February brings beaches, New Year and Carnival; June to August is dry and mild in Rio.

Seasons in the southern hemisphere

Most of Brazil lies south of the equator, so the seasons run opposite to Europe and North America. INMET, Brazil’s national weather institute, gives these start dates for 2026: autumn on 20 March, winter on 21 June, spring on 22 September and summer on 21 December.

For a trip, rain matters more than the calendar. One region can be in its wet season while another is dry in the same weeks, so the best time to visit Brazil depends on where you are going.

Rainy and dry seasons by region

The figures are INMET normals for 1961-1990, published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Region Wetter months Drier months Example (INMET normals)
South-east: Rio, São Paulo November to March (FCDO) June to August Rio: 169 mm in December, 50.5 mm in August
North-east coast: Salvador, Recife April to July (FCDO) September to December Recife: 389.6 mm in June, 47.8 mm in November
Far north-east: Fortaleza, São Luís February to May August to November São Luís: 472.6 mm in April, 10.5 mm in November
Centre: Brasília October to April June to August Brasília: 248.6 mm in December, 8.8 mm in June
Pantanal: Cuiabá October to April (ICMBio) May to September Cuiabá: 209.9 mm in January, 9.6 mm in July
Amazon: Manaus January to May July to September Manaus: 313.5 mm in March, 57.9 mm in August
South: Porto Alegre all year no marked dry season Porto Alegre: 86.1-140 mm in every month

The UK FCDO notes that heavy rain and flooding can happen outside these seasons, and that flash floods and landslides are common where mountains meet the coast, as in Rio. We keep a spare day in plans for the rainy months. For Rio month by month, see Rio de Janeiro weather.

In the Pantanal, ICMBio names January and February as the wettest months and says the Transpantaneira road becomes almost impassable from December. Its advice is to come between May and September.

Winter in Brazil

The coolest months are June to August. July in INMET normals:

City Day, °C Night, °C Rain, mm
Rio de Janeiro 25.3 18.4 56.4
São Paulo 21.8 11.7 44.1
Curitiba 19.4 8.1 89.0
Porto Alegre 19.7 10.7 121.7

Cuiabá 31.8 16.6 9.6
Salvador 26.2 21.4 203.6
Recife 27.3 21.1 385.6

Rio is at its driest, with highs around 25 °C, which suits walking the city and day trips; bring a light layer for evenings. The south has a real winter: Curitiba’s June nights average 7.8 °C. The Pantanal and the centre are dry. The north-east coast stays warm but wet.

High season and holidays

Brazilian summer, December to February, is the high season. Rio’s highs average 28.6-30.2 °C, and New Year and Carnival fall in these weeks. We book accommodation for holiday dates early.
