Salvador, Bahia in brief
Salvador was the first capital of Portuguese America, from 1549 to 1763. UNESCO describes it as a place where European, African and Amerindian cultures met, and as the first slave market of the New World. That history is behind the Afro-Brazilian culture the city is known for today.
The old city sits on two levels. The Upper City (Cidade Alta) stands on an escarpment about 85 m high and held the defenses, the government and the houses. The Lower City (Cidade Baixa) grew around the port and its trade. Public elevators link the two levels, and the ride is part of the visit.
Pelourinho and the historic center
The historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. Pelourinho, its main neighborhood, keeps close to its 16th-century street plan, and many of its buildings were restored in the 1990s. UNESCO names these among its main monuments:
- the Catedral Basílica de Salvador;
- the churches and convents of São Francisco, São Domingos, Carmo and Santo Antônio;
- the Palácio do Arcebispado, the Palácio Saldanha and the Palácio Ferrão;
- the 16th-century squares Largo Terreiro de Jesus and Largo de São Francisco.
The streets go up and down a lot, so wear comfortable shoes. A walk with a private guide puts the churches and squares in order and leaves time for a coffee or lunch in between; we plan it for the morning, before the heat.
The Lacerda Elevator and the Lower City
The Elevador Lacerda connects the Upper City with the Lower City, the business and commercial center. According to the city’s mobility department:
- the elevator in its current art deco form opened on 1 January 1930;
- it is 72 m tall, with two towers and four cabins for 32 passengers each, and the ride takes about 30 seconds;
- IPHAN, the national heritage institute, listed it in 2006;
- it runs from 6:00 to 22:00.
Down in the Comércio district, facing the bay, is the Mercado Modelo. The market opened in 1912, moved in 1971 into the former customs house of 1861 (also listed by IPHAN) and reopened in 1984 after a renovation. Today it has 263 shops on two floors. The city tourism portal gives its hours as Monday to Saturday 9:00-18:00 and Sunday 9:00-14:00.
Barra: the lighthouse and the fort
The Farol da Barra stands in the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra, which the city tourism portal calls one of the first military buildings in Brazil. Inside is the Museu Náutico da Bahia, with underwater archaeology finds, navigation instruments and ship models. The portal does not list opening hours, so we confirm them for your dates. Barra is a good place to end a day in the city.
Afro-Brazilian culture
You see it in the streets, the music and the food. UNESCO inscribed the capoeira circle (roda de capoeira) on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014 and describes it as an Afro-Brazilian practice that is both fight and dance, played in a ring with singing, clapping and instruments. With a local guide you can watch a roda, visit a cultural center or plan a cooking stop. If you want a theme for your days, food, music or religion, tell us and we build the program around it.
Carnival in Salvador
Salvador’s Carnival takes place in the streets, on three official circuits: Dodô, Osmar and Batatinha. On 21.10.2026 the city’s official Carnival site had not yet published the 2027 program, so we do not give dates here; we confirm them once the city announces them. How Salvador compares with Rio, Recife and São Paulo: Carnival in Brazil 2027. Under our rules, a Carnival deposit is not refundable after confirmation, because places are booked for you.
Getting there from Rio
Salvador is a flight from Rio. You buy the tickets, or tell us which ones you have, and we arrange the transfers on both ends: the Rio airport transfer and the pickup at Salvador airport. Many travelers continue north: Recife and Olinda or a stay on the coast, see beach holidays in Brazil.
Safety and health
The U.S. State Department keeps all of Brazil at Level 2, “exercise increased caution” (advisory of 31.08.2026). The UK FCDO (page updated 29.09.2026) has no separate advice for Salvador; its general tips include not going on to city beaches after dark, staying aware in large crowds such as Carnival, buying your own drinks and keeping them in sight. The Government of Canada (14.10.2026) asks for a high degree of caution across the country. Emergency numbers: 190 (police), 192 (ambulance), 193 (fire brigade). Our general page: Rio safety tips.
The CDC recommends the yellow fever vaccine for designated areas of Bahia without naming Salvador, and for the whole state of Rio de Janeiro. On a Rio and Salvador trip, ask your doctor in time. Check entry requirements on official websites.
How many days and how to combine with Rio
Three full days give you time for the historic center at an easy pace, the elevator and the market, an evening in Barra and a day at the beach. A route that works: a few days in Rio, the flight, Salvador, then back to Rio or on to another region. Ready-made routes: two-week Brazil itinerary.
