New Year's Eve 2026/27

New Year's Eve on a yacht in Rio

On New Year's Eve, private boats wait at sea off Copacabana in an order set by the Brazilian Navy, and only boats that pass the Port Authority's inspection can enter the area near the fireworks barges. We find a boat for your group, check its papers and plan the transfer to the marina around the road closures. Tell us your group and you get a proposal within 24 hours.

What we know on 21 October 2026

New Year’s Eve falls on the night of Thursday 31 December 2026. The city’s news page has nothing yet about the 2026/27 programme, and the Rio de Janeiro Port Authority (Capitania dos Portos, part of the Brazilian Navy) has not published rules for boats for that night.

Last year the city announced the boat rules on 26 December 2025, together with the road closures and transport plan. Until the new rules come out we plan on last year’s, and once they are published we check every booking against them.

How the night works on the water

Boats arrive off Copacabana ahead of time and wait at sea in front of the beach. For 2024/25, Agência Brasil described the order from the shore outwards:

  1. the fireworks barges, closest to the beach;
  2. tugs and support boats;
  3. Navy vessels;
  4. smaller boats, including private and passenger boats;
  5. the cruise ships, furthest out.

For 2025/26 the city expected 200 to 300 recreational and passenger boats, with 19 fireworks barges along the seafront.

Last year’s rules for boats

What How it worked for 2025/26
Inspection Navy safety pre-inspections until 30 December, final inspection on 31 December
What is checked Documents, safety equipment and the boat’s passenger limit (as described for 2024/25)
Access Approved boats get a pass seal (selo de passe livre)
Helm The person at the helm wears a zero-alcohol wristband
Barge zone From 18:00 on 31 December to 02:00 on 1 January, closed to boats without seal and wristband
Bad weather The Port Authority may restrict or ban navigation in Guanabara Bay and off Copacabana

That night the Navy had 10 fast launches, 9 support launches, an ocean patrol ship and a patrol vessel off Copacabana, with about 400 sailors.

Why watch from a yacht

You avoid getting to the sand through the road closures. On 31 December last year the city closed Copacabana in stages:

  • from 00:00, charter buses, minibuses and vans could not enter or park in Copacabana and Leme;
  • from 07:00, Avenida Atlântica was closed along its whole length;
  • from 19:00, only regular buses and taxis could enter, until 21:00;
  • from 21:00, all access to Copacabana was closed to every vehicle; it reopened at 05:00 on 1 January, with part of Avenida Atlântica closed for longer.

On the boat you have your own deck and your own group while the beach fills up. You still need to reach the marina and get back by road, so we plan that part carefully. For the night on the beach see New Year’s Eve in Rio, and for the area itself Copacabana.

Planning ahead

Booking

Nobody publishes a date after which boats run out. What we know is that the city expected 200 to 300 boats for the whole night and that inspections end on 31 December. Write as soon as you know your dates and group size.

Boarding and return

Boarding time, the marina or pier, and the return time depend on the boat and are set out in the proposal. Without the Port Authority’s approval a boat cannot enter the barge zone. You head back after the midnight fireworks.

Transfer to the marina

If you stay in Copacabana and the boat leaves from another part of the city, you need to leave before the evening closures. On the way back, until 05:00 a car can only take you to the edge of the closed area. Staying closer to the marina makes the evening simpler, so it helps to plan the hotel and the boat together. We build the transfer around the closure plan the city publishes before the night.

Weather and sea

December is in the rainy season: the UK Foreign Office gives November to March for the south-east of Brazil, including Rio. The Navy’s Hydrography Centre publishes wind and wave forecasts and bad-weather warnings for the sea, and we watch them the day before and on the day. If someone gets seasick, tell us in advance so we can choose the boat with that in mind. More on December in Rio weather.

With children

The night on the water is long and the fireworks are loud. Tell us how many children are coming and their ages; we ask the provider to confirm child-size life jackets and look for a boat with a closed cabin where a child can sleep.

Deposit and cancellation

  • We send a proposal within 24 hours. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm.
  • New Year’s Eve: after confirmation the deposit is not refundable, because the boat is reserved for you. Regular boat trips have a softer rule: cancellation up to 48 hours before.
  • Weather or force majeure, for example a Port Authority ban on navigation: full deposit refund.
  • If the provider cannot run the trip, we find a replacement or refund the deposit in full.

What to tell us in your request

  • How many people, and whether there are children
  • How many hours you want on the water: early departure, waiting for midnight, the trip back
  • Where you are staying, so we can suggest where to board
  • Food, drinks and music on board
  • Whether you need a transfer to the marina and back

A full trip with days before and after the party is on the page New Year trip to Rio. Other boat formats are on the yacht charter page.

Frequently asked questions

When is New Year's Eve 2026/27 in Rio?

On the night of Thursday 31 December 2026 into Friday 1 January 2027. As of 21 October 2026 the city has not published the programme or the boat rules for this night.

Which boats can go to Copacabana that night?

Last year only boats that passed the Navy's inspection received the 'selo de passe livre' (pass seal) and could enter the zone near the fireworks barges, with the person at the helm wearing a zero-alcohol wristband. We only book boats that go through this inspection.

How many boats are there off Copacabana?

For 2025/26 the city expected 200 to 300 recreational and passenger boats, so boats are limited and we suggest writing as soon as you know your dates.

What if the weather is bad?

The Port Authority can restrict or ban navigation in Guanabara Bay and off Copacabana. If that happens, we refund the deposit in full.

Can I cancel a New Year's Eve booking?

Before you confirm, you pay nothing. After confirmation the New Year's Eve deposit is not refundable, because the boat is reserved for you for that night.

Tell us about your trip or group. Proposal within 24 hours.

We reply from 8:00 to 20:00 Rio de Janeiro time (UTC-3). You can write at any time.
