Why Rio samba is protected heritage

On 20 November 2007 the federal heritage institute IPHAN entered the “Matrizes do Samba no Rio de Janeiro” in its register of forms of expression. The request came from the Centro Cultural Cartola, and on 25 March 2025 IPHAN’s advisory council renewed the title. The register names three forms, and you can hear all of them in the city today:

  • partido alto, built on improvisation: some people hold the chorus while the singers (partideiros) take turns making up verses;
  • samba de terreiro, sung in backyards, samba school halls and bar circles, about daily life, parties and love;
  • samba-enredo, the song a school parades with, which grew in the 1920s and 1930s out of the samba schools and the circles of the Estácio neighbourhood.

Samba schools and their rehearsals

Each samba school (escola de samba) has a hall, the quadra, where it chooses its song for the year and rehearses in the months before Carnival, inside and in the streets around it. There is no single official calendar for these hall rehearsals: each school announces its own nights and may move them. We check which school and which night fit your trip. More on the format on samba school rehearsals in Rio.

Some Grupo Especial schools are based outside the city of Rio. Beija-Flor is in Nilópolis, Grande Rio in Duque de Caxias and Viradouro in Niterói. For their nights, plan a car there and back, for example with a private driver.

Technical rehearsals at the Sambadrome: January 2027

The Sambadrome (officially Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro) was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, opened in 1984 and holds more than 70,000 people, according to Riotur. In January each Grupo Especial school runs the whole avenue while LIESA tests the light and sound. LIESA runs these nights as public events.

Date Start Grupo Especial schools
Saturday 23 January 17:30 children’s schools, 20:00 main schools União de Maricá, Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, Paraíso do Tuiuti
Sunday 24 January 17:00 children’s schools, 19:00 main schools Unidos de Vila Isabel, Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, Unidos da Tijuca
Saturday 30 January 17:30 children’s schools, 20:00 main schools Acadêmicos do Salgueiro, Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Portela
Sunday 31 January 17:00 Lavagem da Sapucaí (washing of the avenue), 19:00 main schools Unidos do Viradouro, Acadêmicos do Grande Rio, Estação Primeira de Mangueira

The competition nights follow on the same avenue on 7, 8 and 9 February 2027, with four schools a night. For dates, seats and how to go, see Rio Carnival and Sambadrome tickets.

Samba circles: Lapa, Pedra do Sal, Madureira

A roda looks simple. Musicians play in a circle, often around a bar table or in the street, and the crowd stands close and sings the choruses. Days and times shift from season to season, so we choose the night for your dates.

Lapa

Riotur calls Lapa the cradle of Rio’s bohemian life. It is full of bars, restaurants and clubs, and samba, choro and forró all have their place there. The landmark is the Arcos da Lapa, the old Carioca aqueduct, which has carried the Santa Teresa tram since 1896.

Pedra do Sal

This rock at the end of Rua Argemiro Bulcão, in the port area, is considered the cradle of Rio samba, and sambistas still meet here. The name comes from the salt that enslaved Africans unloaded onto the rock in the 17th century. From the second half of the 19th century dockworkers gathered here to sing and dance; the first Carnival ranchos and samba circles are linked to the spot, and Pixinguinha, Donga and João da Baiana came through. The state heritage institute INEPAC listed it in 1984. The Valongo Wharf (Cais do Valongo), nearby, is part of the same African heritage circuit in the port.

Madureira

Riotur also calls this northern neighbourhood a cradle of samba. It is home to two historic schools, Portela and Império Serrano, and to the Casa do Jongo and the Feira das Yabás.

Dance it yourself

A class is the easiest start. We find a teacher or school for your level, from a first lesson to preparing for the parade: see cooking and samba classes in Rio. At Carnival 2027 you can also walk the Sambadrome in a school’s costume: how to parade at Rio Carnival.

At night: official safety advice

Rehearsals and rodas happen in the evening, in crowds. The UK FCDO advice is practical: avoid using your phone in the street, especially between 4pm and 9pm; buy your own drinks and keep them in sight; do not hail taxis on the street, and when you book through an official app, check that the registration and driver match. How we help

We pick a samba night for your dates: a rehearsal in a school’s hall, a roda in Lapa, at Pedra do Sal or in Madureira, or a January technical rehearsal at the Sambadrome. We book the car there and back, and on request a guide who speaks your language and explains what is going on around you. For Carnival we book Sambadrome seats. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I hear samba in Rio outside Carnival?

At samba school rehearsals in their halls, at samba circles in Lapa, at Pedra do Sal and in Madureira, and at bars and music houses in Lapa. Schedules change by season, so we pick the evening for your dates.

When are the 2027 technical rehearsals at the Sambadrome?

On 23, 24, 30 and 31 January 2027, in the evening. Three Grupo Especial schools rehearse each night, and on 23, 24 and 30 January the evening opens with children's samba schools. LIESA, the schools' league, runs them as public events.

What is a roda de samba?

A circle of musicians playing samba, often at a bar table or in the street, with people standing around and singing the chorus. Partido alto is common there: singers take turns improvising verses while everyone else keeps the refrain.

Why is Rio samba protected as heritage?

On 20 November 2007 the federal heritage institute IPHAN registered the 'matrices of samba in Rio de Janeiro': partido alto, samba de terreiro and samba-enredo. The title was renewed on 25 March 2025.

Can I take a samba class in Rio?

Yes. We find a first class for beginners, a private lesson for a couple, or a short series before you parade at Carnival, matched to your level and dates.
