Rio de Janeiro with kids: a private family trip

Rio de Janeiro works well with kids if you keep days short and start early: the Sugarloaf cable car, the Corcovado train, AquaRio, the Museum of Tomorrow, the Botanical Garden, calm Praia Vermelha and the playgrounds of Tijuca Forest. We plan the days around your children's ages, book a private driver with the right child seats and a guide who speaks your language, and send a priced proposal within 24 hours.

What works in Rio de Janeiro with kids

Most family favourites in Rio are inside the city, so drives stay short and you can head back to the hotel for a nap.

Place Why children like it Worth knowing
Sugarloaf cable car Two cable car rides up to views over the bay Open on rainy days with covered areas; strong wind or lightning can pause the cars for a while. The park’s own pages give different hours, so we check them for your date.
Christ the Redeemer by train A mountain train through the forest from Cosme Velho Trains every 20 minutes, 8:00 to 18:00. Strollers must stay folded on board. Until about May 2027 the escalators are being replaced and the last 80 steps are on foot; there are baby-changing rooms and shaded benches on the way. Vans also leave from Copacabana and Largo do Machado.
AquaRio About 10,000 animals of 350 species in more than 28 tanks Open daily 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:00.
Museum of Tomorrow Interactive science exhibits on Praça Mauá Open Thursday to Tuesday, 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:00; closed on Wednesdays.
Botanical Garden Shaded paths, space to walk at a child’s pace Thursday to Tuesday 8:00 to 17:00, Wednesday 11:00 to 17:00.
Praia Vermelha Riotur, the city’s tourism office, describes its sea as calm, under Sugarloaf in Urca Fits easily before or after the cable car.
Tijuca Forest Easy trails, a waterfall, a lake and playgrounds The park is open daily 8:00 to 17:00. Bom Retiro and Recanto dos Pintores have play equipment; Caminho das Grutas and the Mirante do Excelsior trail are rated easy.

Our guide adjusts the order on the day: a museum when it rains, the beach when the sun comes out, a viewpoint once the clouds lift. For a full sightseeing day with a guide, see our private tour of Rio.

Pace, car seats and the heat

With younger children we plan one main sight in the morning, lunch, and a quiet afternoon. Teenagers usually manage two sights and a sunset.

Brazil’s traffic council, CONTRAN (Resolution 819/2021), requires children under 10 who are shorter than 1.45 m to ride in the back seat in a restraint that suits them:

  • infant carrier: up to 1 year or 13 kg;
  • child seat: from 1 to 4 years, or 9 to 18 kg;
  • booster seat: from 4 to 7.5 years, or 15 to 36 kg and up to 1.45 m;
  • seat belt: from 7.5 to 10 years, or taller than 1.45 m.

The same resolution exempts taxis, rental vehicles and ride-hailing cars in service from this rule for children up to 7.5, so a hailed car may come without a seat. We tell the driver the ages and weights in advance and ask for the seats to be fitted before pickup. More on our private driver in Rio and the airport transfer, where the seat is ready when you land.

Brazil’s Ministry of Health advises planning outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon, drinking water even when you are not thirsty, offering children liquids all the time, wearing light, breathable clothing and keeping children somewhere cool, such as an air-conditioned shopping centre, in the hottest hours. Ask your paediatrician about sunscreen for babies. Our driver keeps water in the car, and we keep midday for rest.

A sample 5-day family plan

  1. Arrival. Private transfer from the airport with child seats fitted. Check in, an easy walk along the beach near your hotel, an early night.
  2. Sugarloaf and Praia Vermelha. The cable car in the morning, before the queues and the heat, then sand and calm water at Praia Vermelha below. Afternoon at the hotel pool.
  3. Christ the Redeemer and the Botanical Garden. An early train from Cosme Velho, a baby carrier for the final steps, then lunch and a shaded walk in the Botanical Garden.
  4. AquaRio and the Museum of Tomorrow. Both are in the port area, so one day covers them; avoid Wednesday, when the museum is closed.
  5. Tijuca Forest. A short trail, the playground at Bom Retiro and the lake at Açude da Solidão, back in time for a last swim.

Safety: official advice

  • The US State Department rates Brazil Level 2, “Exercise increased caution” (advisory of 31.08.2026, checked 20.10.2026).
  • Canada advises a high degree of caution across Brazil (updated 14.10.2026).
  • The UK Foreign Office (updated 19.10.2026) advises avoiding all favelas, keeping your phone out of sight in the street, staying off city beaches after dark, booking rides only through official apps or taxi booths, and checking warning flags before swimming because currents can be strong.
  • Emergency numbers in Brazil: 190 police, 192 ambulance, 193 fire brigade.

We plan daytime routes with door-to-door transport, which also keeps tired children off the pavement.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rio de Janeiro good for a trip with kids?

Yes, if you plan short days with an early start and a break in the hottest hours. Cable cars, a mountain train, an aquarium, a hands-on science museum and forest playgrounds are all inside the city.

Will the car have child seats?

Yes, if you tell us the ages and weights. Brazilian traffic rules (CONTRAN Resolution 819/2021) require a restraint suited to age, weight and height for children under 10 who are shorter than 1.45 m, in the back seat, and we ask the driver to fit them before pickup.

Can we bring a stroller to Christ the Redeemer?

Yes, but on the Corcovado train it must stay folded for the whole ride. Until about May 2027 the last 80 steps to the statue are on foot, so a baby carrier is easier.

What is the best time of day for sightseeing with children?

Early morning or late afternoon. Brazil's Ministry of Health advises planning outdoor activities for the coolest hours and offering children water all the time.

How much does a family trip to Rio cost?

The price is on request, and our proposal comes within 24 hours. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm.

Can we cancel a tour if a child gets sick?

Yes. Tours, transfers and boat trips can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before. You can also move the date once with 48 hours' notice if the provider has another slot.

Tell us about your trip or group. Proposal within 24 hours.

Price on request.

We reply from 8:00 to 20:00 Rio de Janeiro time (UTC-3). You can write at any time.
