Rio de Janeiro historic centre: a half-day walk
The historic centre of Rio runs from Praça XV, where the colonial and imperial city began, north to the port: Candelária, the São Bento Monastery, the Boulevard Olímpico, Praça Mauá and Little Africa with Pedra do Sal and the Valongo Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of it is flat and walkable, and a half day covers the main stops. Plan it for a weekday or Saturday: several places close on Sundays or Mondays.

The stops
Praça XV and Paço Imperial
The Paço Imperial was built in 1743 as the residence of the viceroys. When the court of D. João VI arrived, it became the seat of government of the Kingdom and then the Empire; after the Republic it housed the post and telegraph office. Iphan has protected it since 1938, and it has been a cultural centre since 1985. Exhibitions are open Tuesday to Sunday and on holidays 12:00-18:00, the building daily 11:00-18:00, with free entry (Iphan, checked 29.10.2026).
Every Saturday the square hosts an antiques fair, held there since 1970, with old photographs, vinyl records, comics, toys and other finds.
Across the square, the Palácio Tiradentes stands where the old jail held Tiradentes before his execution on 21 April 1792. The current palace opened on 6 May 1926 and, according to Riotur, is open to visitors Monday to Friday 10:00-17:00.
Ilha Fiscal
The island palace hosted the “last ball of the Empire” a few days before the Republic was proclaimed. Boats leave from the Espaço Cultural da Marinha on the Boulevard Olímpico. According to the Navy, visits run Thursday to Sunday at 12:45, 14:15 and 15:30, and the ticket also covers the Navy Cultural Space. On Thursdays the regular tours are in English and Portuguese. Tickets are sold on ingressocomdesconto.com.br or at the Navy Cultural Space box office.
There are no visits on 30 and 31 October; 12, 21, 27 and 28 November; 10 December 2026; or on 1 January, from Carnival Saturday to Ash Wednesday, and on 24, 25 and 31 December. Visits can also be called off in heavy rain or at extreme tides. The Navy Cultural Space costs R$ 20,00 (R$ 10,00 meia) and is free on Tuesdays except holidays (Navy, checked 29.10.2026). The Museu Naval nearby (Rua Dom Manuel, 15) opens Thursday to Sunday and holidays 13:00-17:00 with free entry.
Candelária Church
Legend says the captains of a Spanish ship named Candelária vowed to build a chapel if they survived a storm around 1609. Records begin in 1710; the current Latin-cross church was designed by Francisco João Roscio, begun in 1775 and opened, still unfinished, in 1811. The dome of Lisbon lioz stone was built in 1856-1877, and the bronze doors date from 1901. Masses Monday to Friday at 12:15 and on Sunday at 10:30 (the church opens at 9:30); on Saturdays the church is closed. Visits Monday to Friday 7:30-16:00.
São Bento Monastery
Benedictine monks from Bahia founded the monastery in 1590. Visitors can enter the church of Nossa Senhora de Montserrat, with Art Nouveau wrought-iron gates and jacaranda altars covered in gold. The rest of the monastery is closed to visitors. The church is open daily 6:30-18:30. The conventual mass is at 7:15 on weekdays and at 10:00 on Sundays, sung entirely in Gregorian chant. Address: Rua Dom Gerardo, 68.
Real Gabinete Português de Leitura
Founded on 14 May 1837 to give the Portuguese of Rio access to books from home, it holds about 350,000 works by Portuguese authors. Books can be read in the reading room. Open Monday to Friday 10:00-17:00.
Confeitaria Colombo
The historic tea house is at Rua Gonçalves Dias, 32, with two more locations in Copacabana and at CCBB. Check opening times with the confeitaria.
Boulevard Olímpico and Praça Mauá
The waterfront promenade came out of the Porto Maravilha project, begun in 2010. Eduardo Kobra’s Etnias mural covers 2,600 m², with five faces of indigenous peoples from different continents; according to Riotur, Guinness lists it as the world’s second-largest graffiti. At Praça Mauá, the Museum of Tomorrow is open Thursday to Tuesday 10:00-18:00 and MAR is closed on Wednesdays and free on Tuesdays. More in our museums guide.
Valongo Wharf
From 1811 the stone wharf was the landing place for enslaved Africans brought to Rio; by estimates, up to 900,000 passed through it. In 1843 it was covered by the Cais da Imperatriz, built for the arrival of Empress Teresa Cristina. Uncovered during the port works in 2011, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. It is an open-air site on Av. Barão de Tefé, Praça Jornal do Comércio, in Saúde.
Pedra do Sal
At the foot of Morro da Conceição, Pedra do Sal is at the heart of the area the samba musician Heitor dos Prazeres called Little Africa (Pequena África). Enslaved people and their descendants played choro and samba here, and the place is protected as historic and religious heritage. Today there is free street samba on Monday and Friday evenings. The big day is 2 December, Brazil’s National Samba Day. Nearby, Largo de São Francisco da Prainha has a church from 1696 and a statue of Mercedes Baptista, the first Black ballerina in the Theatro Municipal’s permanent company.
