What we arrange
We book a private yacht or motorboat with a skipper for your date. The proposal sets out the route, the departure point, the time on board and any extras: food and drinks, a photographer, flowers, group transfers to the pier. A local provider we have vetted runs each boat; you deal only with us and get the provider details after you confirm.
Routes from Rio de Janeiro
| Route | What you see |
|---|---|
| Guanabara Bay | Sugarloaf, Urca and Niterói across the water; the bay opens between the São João fort in Rio and the Santa Cruz fort in Niterói |
| Copacabana and Ipanema | The beaches and the hills from the sea, a good route for sunset |
| Ilhas Cagarras | Islands about 5 km south of Ipanema, a federal protected area |
Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay and the Copacabana seafront are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea” (2012).
The Cagarras are a Natural Monument created by federal law in 2010 and managed by ICMBio, the federal agency for protected areas: four islands, two islets and the sea within 10 metres of each. Its rules ban anchoring within 30 metres of any island, fishing and taking shells or stones, limit noise, and ask visitors to take their rubbish back. None of the islands has a beach or a pier. Scuba diving and the Ilha Comprida trail need guides and boats credentialed by ICMBio, and we book only those.
Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande
Angra dos Reis lies 155 km from Rio on the BR-101, with 365 islands and islets and coves reachable only by boat, Lagoa Azul among them. A group drives to the pier and boards there, for a day or as part of a longer trip (see Rio, Ilha Grande and Paraty).
- Ilha Grande is reached only by boat. Its state park, run by INEA, the Rio de Janeiro state environment agency, covers more than 12,000 hectares, and the island has been part of the Tamoios Environmental Protection Area since 1982. The Praia do Sul State Biological Reserve is closed to tourists: federal law allows visits to biological reserves only for educational purposes.
- With Paraty, the island is the UNESCO World Heritage site “Paraty and Ilha Grande: Culture and Biodiversity”, listed in 2019 for culture and nature.
- Since June 1, 2026, Angra dos Reis has charged visitors a tourism fee, with Ilha Grande and the other islands among the destinations. Each traveler needs an individual voucher; children under 12, people over 60 and people with disabilities are exempt. The fee is 50% off in 2026 and 25% off in 2027. We check whether it applies to your route and include it in the quote.

New Year’s Eve on the water
From the sea, you can watch the fireworks only from a boat that has passed the inspection of the Capitania dos Portos, the Navy’s port authority. The 2026/27 rules had not been published by October 9, 2026, so we plan by the 2025/26 rules the city published:
- pre-inspections until December 30 and a final inspection on December 31;
- a “passe livre” sticker for approved boats and a “zero alcohol” wristband for their skippers;
- from 18:00 on December 31 to 02:00 on January 1, the sea near the fireworks barges, in the bay and off Copacabana, closed to all other boats;
- the Capitania could restrict or ban navigation in bad weather.
The city expected 200 to 300 boats and placed 19 fireworks barges along Copacabana. For 2024/25, skippers took a breathalyzer test on December 31. We book only boats that pass. See also our New Year’s Eve page and the New Year’s Eve group program.
Documents and safety
Boats in Brazil are registered with the Navy; up to 100 gross tonnage the document is the TIE (Título de Inscrição de Embarcação), under the Navy standards NORMAM-211 for recreational and NORMAM-201 for commercial boats. Before we book, we check:
- the boat’s registration document;
- the skipper’s Navy licence, whose category sets where the skipper may navigate;
- the capacity: no more guests than the boat’s documents allow (at event inspections, the Capitania counts the people on board against that limit);
- life jackets: the Navy’s safety campaign calls for one for everyone on board, and the provider confirms this.
We tell you what we checked, and you can ask to see the documents before boarding.
For groups and companies
For a large group we book one bigger boat or several boats sailing together, each within its documented capacity. A day on the water fits into an incentive trip, and the same day can include a helicopter flight. Travel agencies get net rates or commission on request: see for travel agencies.
What the price depends on
We do not publish prices; they depend on:
- the size and type of the boat, and its crew;
- the hours on board and the route (Angra dos Reis adds the drive from Rio);
- the date: weekends, holidays and New Year’s Eve;
- food, drinks, a photographer, decoration;
- the number of boats.
Our fee is already included in the price.
Booking, cancellation and terms
Send us the date, the number of guests, the occasion, Rio or Angra dos Reis, and the budget. A person from our team replies the same working day (8:00-20:00 Rio time), and the proposal with the boat, its capacity, the route and the price follows within 24 hours. To book, you pay our deposit; the rest goes to the provider as the proposal sets out.
- Free cancellation up to 48 hours before the trip; after that the deposit is non-refundable.
- New Year’s Eve: the deposit is non-refundable once you confirm, because the boat is reserved for you.
- Bad weather: we move the trip or refund the deposit in full.
- If the provider or we cannot deliver, we find a replacement; if there is none, we refund the deposit in full.
Group programs start from about 10 people, and groups of 50 and more are handled together with a large local receptive partner, with one contact on our team. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm.
Write to us with your date and the number of guests. Our team works with you in English or Portuguese.
Frequently asked questions
How many people can one boat take?
No more than the boat's documents allow. For a larger group we book a bigger boat or several boats, and the proposal states the capacity of each one.
Can we watch the New Year's Eve fireworks from a boat?
Yes, on a boat that has passed the inspection of the Capitania dos Portos. Last time, only inspected boats whose skippers wore the zero-alcohol wristband could enter the zone near the fireworks barges between 18:00 and 02:00. Our New Year's Eve deposit is non-refundable once you confirm.
Can you arrange a marriage proposal on board?
Yes. We book a boat for two at sunset or at the time you choose, and add flowers or a photographer if you want them. Our priced proposal lists the route, the time on board and what is included.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We move the trip to another date or refund the deposit in full. Otherwise, cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the trip.
Do we pay anything before we confirm?
No. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal, and you pay nothing before you confirm.
