Feira de Antiguidades da Praça XV (Saturday)

Every Saturday since 1970, Praça XV in the Centro hosts an antiques and flea market (Rio Film Commission). Stalls sell old photographs, vinyl records, comics, toys, clothes and curiosities. Clothes are mostly near the Paço Imperial, antiques by the Arco do Teles, and the rest toward the ferry terminal. Come in the morning: the organisers list the fair every Saturday from 6:00 to 15:00. On the same afternoon there is a samba roda on the corner of Rua do Ouvidor and Rua do Mercado, a few steps away (see samba in Rio).

Feira do Rio Antigo, Rua do Lavradio (Saturday)

On Rua do Lavradio, between Lapa and the Centro, Riotur counts about 300 stalls of furniture, clothes, accessories and decoration, with live music, photo shows and dancing, and about 15,000 visitors per edition. Time Out lists Saturdays from 10:00 to 19:00, with retro cameras, typewriters and vintage furniture. The organising association, Polo Novo Rio Antigo, holds it every Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00. Entry is free.

Feira Hippie de Ipanema (Sunday)

The official name is Feirarte de Ipanema. It began in the late 1960s, when a group of artists started selling paintings on Praça General Osório (Riotur). Today more than 600 exhibitors sell art, crafts and souvenirs in glass, ceramics, wood, stone, silver, seeds and fabric. Sundays, 09:00-18:00 (Riotur).

Feira de São Cristóvão (Tuesday to Sunday)

The official name is Centro Municipal Luiz Gonzaga de Tradições Nordestinas. Hundreds of stalls sell food and goods from the Northeast: crafts, clothes, hammocks, drinks, baião de dois, carne de sol com aipim. In the evening there is live forró, xote and xaxado. Hours: Tuesday to Thursday 10:00-18:00, Friday and Saturday 10:00-04:00, Sunday 10:00-20:00, closed on Monday. Entry is charged on Friday, Saturday and Sunday: cash at the box office or online on rioingressos.com.br (official site). Instagram: @saocristovaofeiraoficial.

Feira da Glória (Sunday)

Time Out calls it the city’s largest street market (feira livre): fresh produce, food from many countries, crafts, clothes and a samba roda, on Sundays from 09:00 to 18:00 on Rua Augusto Severo. In July 2025 a state law recognised it as intangible cultural heritage. Since 20 July 2025 most food stalls have moved to Praça Paris, next door.

Feira das Yabás (2nd Sunday of the month)

In Oswaldo Cruz, near Madureira, the matriarchs of the samba families cook feijoada, mocotó, angu à baiana, cozido and vaca atolada, while a roda de samba, choro and jongo play on Praça Paulo da Portela. The fair was created by the sambista Marquinhos de Oswaldo Cruz and is open to all, from 13:00.

CADEG, Benfica (Monday to Saturday)

The Mercado Municipal do Rio de Janeiro is at Rua Capitão Félix, 110, Benfica. The municipal market opened in 1907 and the current complex in 1962. The flower and plant market runs Monday to Saturday from 04:00 to 12:00 (from 02:00 on Thursday); shops, bars and restaurants inside keep their own hours, with salt cod, Portuguese sweets, cheese and drinks. CADEG holds seasonal food festivals during the year, announced on its site.

Also worth knowing

The Mercadão de Madureira, a large covered market in the North Zone, is part of Riotur’s shopping guide. Many neighbourhoods also have weekly street markets for fruit and vegetables.

How we help

  • A market morning with a private guide in your language: English at short notice, other languages on request, confirmed in the proposal.
  • A private driver, useful for São Cristóvão, CADEG and Oswaldo Cruz, which are far from the beaches.
  • We combine a market with nearby sights: Praça XV with the historic centre, Lavradio with Lapa and Santa Teresa, Yabás with samba in Madureira.
  • We check that the fair is on for your date.
