Brazil independent travel: what is easy on your own and where help saves time

You can travel Brazil without a tour: flights and hotels book online, the Rio metro takes contactless bank cards, and our free guides cover the airport, money, SIM cards and safety advice. Local help pays off where the logistics pile up: Carnival seats, transfers with luggage, groups, trips across several cities and changes in Portuguese. You can also book just one part, such as an airport transfer, a driver or a single day.

What is easy to do on your own

A week in Rio de Janeiro outside the big holidays works well without anyone’s help. Most of the groundwork is online, and we have written free guides for each step.

  • Arrival: Galeão (GIG) has taxi counters and a ride app pickup point in Terminal 2, and the airport lists 24-hour ATMs and exchange desks. Our Rio airports guide covers each option, door by door.
  • Getting around: By day the MetrôRio metro is the simplest way to move between Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo and the centre, and you pay by tapping a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Elo card at the turnstile. City buses have not taken cash on board since 30 May 2026. See getting around Rio.
  • Money: The Government of Canada says cards are widely accepted in cities, restaurants and stores. Pix, the instant payment everyone in Brazil uses, works from an account at a Brazilian institution, so visitors pay by card and keep a little cash. Details: money in Brazil.
  • Phone: Brazilian law requires every prepaid line to be registered, and the online route asks for a CPF. Most visitors finish it at a carrier store or skip it with roaming or a travel eSIM. The Aerochip point at Galeão opens 06:00 to 22:00. See Brazil SIM card and eSIM.
  • Language: Learn a few dozen words and download Portuguese in your translation app. Our Portuguese phrases for Brazil list has the ones you will use in taxis, restaurants and shops.
  • Staying alert: The U.S. State Department rates Brazil Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (31.08.2026). What the official advisories recommend for Rio is collected in our Rio safety tips.

Where local help saves time

An independent traveller can handle all of this, but it takes time, phone calls and often Portuguese. These are the parts people most often hand over to us.

Carnival tickets and logistics

The Special Group parades at the Sambadrome on 7, 8 and 9 February 2027 (LIESA). In the September sale stage LIESA counted limits per CPF, and its published rules do not cover foreign buyers. Add road closures around the Sambadrome and hotels that fill early, and Carnival becomes a planning job. More: Sambadrome tickets.

New Year’s Eve

Last time the city closed every access to Copacabana to all vehicles from 21:00 on 31 December, and the transport plan came out on 26 December. If you are staying elsewhere, that leaves a short window to work out how you get in and back. See New Year’s Eve in Rio.

Transfers with luggage

After a long flight, with suitcases and no local SIM yet, a driver waiting in arrivals makes the first hour simpler. The same goes for late arrivals and transfers between cities.

Groups and families

A larger party often needs more than one car, and someone always ends up waiting for the others. One vehicle, one plan and one contact is easier, especially with children or older relatives.

Multi-city trips

Rio plus Iguazu, the Pantanal or the north-east means domestic flights, transfers at each end and guides in each region. Each piece has to fit with the next one, and a delayed flight moves all of them.

Language and last-minute changes

Drivers, boat owners and small guesthouses mostly write in Portuguese. When rain cancels a boat or a flight changes, someone has to rebook in Portuguese, the same day.

Support during the trip

If a passport goes missing or someone falls ill, you need an interpreter and someone who knows where to go. That is what our on-trip assistance covers.

Book just one part

You can plan most of the trip yourself and give us one piece of it. The most common choices:

  • an airport transfer, with the driver waiting in arrivals for your flight;
  • a private driver for a day trip or a full day in the city;
  • a single day with a private guide who speaks your language;
  • seats for one Carnival night, with the transport for that night planned around the closures.

Tours and transfers can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before. For New Year’s Eve and Carnival the deposit is not refundable once you confirm, because seats and tickets are reserved for you.

What we take on. The parts that eat into a holiday: transfers, drivers, guides, day trips, Carnival and New Year’s Eve, and routes across Brazil with transport and guides in each region. You pay nothing before you confirm. How requests, deposits and changes work: how we work. For a fully planned trip, see private trips in Rio.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel Brazil without a tour?

Yes. Flights and accommodation book online, and in Rio the metro, taxis and ride apps cover most trips. Help is most useful for Carnival, New Year's Eve, day trips and routes across several regions.

Do I need to speak Portuguese?

Portuguese is Brazil's official language, and outside hotels and the main sights English is not a given. A phrase list and a translation app with Portuguese downloaded cover everyday situations.

Can I pay by card in Brazil?

Mostly yes. The Government of Canada says cards are widely accepted in cities, restaurants and stores, less so in rural areas and informal markets. Pix needs an account at a Brazilian institution, so visitors use cards and some cash.

Can a foreigner buy Sambadrome tickets for Carnival?

LIESA's published sale rules count limits per CPF, the Brazilian taxpayer number, and do not cover foreign buyers. We book seats on any night and in any sector for travellers from abroad; price on request, proposal within 24 hours.

Can I book only one service from you?

Yes. Many independent travellers book just an airport transfer, a private driver for a day trip or a guide for one day, and plan everything else themselves.

What does it cost to book one service through you?

Price on request, proposal within 24 hours. The price in the proposal already includes our fee, and you pay nothing before you confirm.

Tell us about your trip or group. Proposal within 24 hours.
