New Year 2026/27 in Rio: what is known

• The night runs from Thursday 31 December 2026 to Friday 1 January 2027. 1 January is a national holiday in Brazil, and it is followed by a weekend.
• On 21 October 2026 the city hall and Riotur had not yet published the stages, artists, fireworks or the traffic and metro plan for this night. We do not promise names on stage before they are announced.
• Last year the city hall published its operational plan on 26 December. We plan this year’s days on last year’s rules and update your plan when the new one appears.

Four ways to spend midnight

Sample 5-day New Year trip to Rio

Example: arrive on Tuesday 29 December, fly out on the night of 2 January. We move the days to fit your flights.

Sample 7-day plan

A week adds a trip out of the city, but never on 31 December or the morning of 1 January. Example: arrive on Monday 28 December, fly out on the night of 3 January.

How we set out the days

• No trips out on 31 December, and arrival by the 30th. The 2026/27 plan is not out yet, so we work from last year’s: Avenida Atlântica closed from 7:00 on 31 December, from 19:00 only regular buses and taxis could enter Copacabana, from 21:00 the area was closed to all vehicles, and roads reopened at 5:00 on 1 January.
• Last year charter buses and vans could not enter or park in Copacabana and Leme from midnight on 31 December. Staying in Copacabana or Leme lets you walk to the beach. If your hotel is further away, the car drops you before the closures and you walk the last part with your guide.
• Last year the metro ran from 19:00 to 5:00 that night only with a special pass bought in advance in the MetrôRio app or website; regular cards and contactless payment did not work.
• 1 January is slow. The Imperial Museum in Petrópolis is closed that day, and we check other opening hours for your dates.
• Heat and rain. INMET normals for December give an average high of 28.6 °C, 169 mm of rain and 13 rainy days, and the UK Foreign Office lists November to March as the rainy season in Rio. We put the city in the mornings and late afternoons and keep a spare day.
• Until the end of May 2027 the Corcovado escalators are being replaced: half as many people can be at the top at once, and everyone climbs the last 80 steps. We book the morning.
• Take only what you need to the beach that night. Official advice is collected on Rio safety tips. Check entry requirements on official websites.

Booking and cancellation

• Book your stay first, then the night. There is no official date after which kiosk places or boats are gone, so the proposal says what is still open for your dates, and we book right after you reply.
• Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm.
• After confirmation the New Year deposit is not refundable. One date change is possible with 48 hours’ notice if the provider has another date.
