What the hike is
This is the walking way up to Christ the Redeemer. You start in the gardens of Parque Lage in Jardim Botânico and climb through the forest of Tijuca National Park to Alto Corcovado, at 704 m. The park gives the climb at up to about four hours and warns of very steep sections, though no climbing equipment is needed.
The same park describes a shorter option from Paineiras: 1.15 km, 260 m of climb, about 45 minutes, moderate, start by 15:00. Other ways to reach the statue, by train or van: Christ the Redeemer.
The trail step by step
- You arrive at the Parque Lage gate, Rua Jardim Botânico 414, which opens at 8:00.
- You walk through the park to the trail guardhouse, which lets hikers in until 15:00.
- The trail climbs through forest, with very steep sections on the way up.
- You come out at Alto Corcovado. To enter the monument area, you buy a ticket at the Trem do Corcovado office there; trail-side ticket sales run from 8:00 to 17:00.
- Going down: the monument ticket does not include the descent. You can buy a separate train ticket or arrange a car pickup with us. Pedestrians may not walk down the Corcovado road.
The park does not publish the length or elevation gain of the Parque Lage route, so we leave them out.
Best time for photos
The park gives no advice on light. What the hours allow: an 8:00 start at Parque Lage gives you the whole morning and room to enjoy the top. The trail must be entered by 15:00, so a late-day summit is possible only if you climb fast, and you still need ticket sales open (until 17:00) to enter the monument. As general advice, a clear morning after a dry night tends to show the bay best.

How we help
We find you a guide who knows the trail, so you won’t get lost, you walk at your own pace and get the shots from the best viewpoints. A photographer and a transfer from your hotel come on request, and if you ride the train down, a car can wait for you at the Cosme Velho station. We set the start time with the guide and check the weather the day before.
Other peaks for the same trip: Pico da Tijuca and Morro da Urca. All seven compared on hiking in Rio.
Our fee is already included in the price. Price on request, proposal within 24 hours, and you pay nothing before you confirm.
