Rio guide
Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro: the best areas compared
For a first trip, Copacabana or Ipanema is the easiest base in Rio de Janeiro: the beach is a short walk and metro line 1 runs straight to Botafogo, Flamengo and the center. Families often prefer Leblon, Botafogo and Lapa are for nights out, and Barra da Tijuca suits travelers who want the longest beach in the state and are happy to get around by car.

The areas one by one
Copacabana
Copacabana and the small neighboring Leme share 4.15 km of beach along Avenida Atlântica up to Copacabana Fort, Riotur says. The area has three line 1 stations, and line 1 runs to Botafogo, Flamengo and the center with no changes. Official vans to Christ the Redeemer board at Praça do Lido on Avenida Atlântica, about ten minutes’ walk from Cardeal Arcoverde station. The beach is busy, and on New Year’s Eve the neighborhood closes to traffic. More: Copacabana.
Ipanema
Ipanema beach runs 2 km from Arpoador to Jardim de Alah. Two lines stop here: General Osório on line 1 and Nossa Senhora da Paz on line 4, which carries on to Leblon and Barra. The downsides are close to Copacabana’s: a busy beach and a lot of people around holidays. More: Ipanema.
Leblon
Past Jardim de Alah the beach becomes Leblon, along Avenida Delfim Moreira. Riotur describes it as a beach where families come every day, with a children’s area nicknamed Baixo Bebê. Metro stations are Jardim de Alah and Antero de Quental on line 4. Line 1 does not reach Leblon, so the center and the Sambadrome take longer than from Copacabana. More: Leblon.
Botafogo
Botafogo station sits on lines 1 and 2, between Flamengo and Copacabana. Riotur lists Botafogo among the city’s nightlife areas, with relaxed bars and restaurants and no dress code. The neighborhood faces a bay, so for an ocean beach you take the metro to Copacabana or Ipanema.
Flamengo
The neighborhood’s big asset is Flamengo Park, with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx, stretching from Santos Dumont airport to the start of Botafogo beach. On Sundays its roads close to cars from 7:00 to 18:00 (Riotur). Flamengo and Largo do Machado stations are on lines 1 and 2, and official vans to Christ the Redeemer also leave from Largo do Machado. There is no ocean beach.
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a hillside district above the center, with old houses, artists’ studios, bars and restaurants. The streets are steep. The historic tram (bonde) leaves from Rua Lélio Gama near Carioca station every day from 8:00 to 17:00, every 15 to 20 minutes, according to Riotur. There is no metro station, and the tram does not run in the evening, which makes it a better place to visit than a base for a whole stay.
Centro and Lapa
The center has several stations on the shared stretch of lines 1 and 2, including Carioca and Cinelândia. The Santa Teresa tram leaves from here, and official vans to Christ the Redeemer board at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Riotur calls Lapa a spot for cariocas every weekend: Circo Voador hosts concerts and parties, and Rio Scenarium nearby has feijoada and samba on Saturdays. The Sambadrome stations are closest from here. There is no beach, and Lapa gets crowded at weekends.
Barra da Tijuca
Barra beach is the longest in Rio de Janeiro state, 14.4 km along Avenida Lúcio Costa to Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Riotur says, and it is popular for surfing, windsurfing and bodyboarding. The only metro station is Jardim Oceânico on line 4. Barra is the farthest area on this page from the center, and most of it is a car ride from the metro.
Safety: what to rely on
Official advisories do not rank Rio neighborhoods, so we do not either. Here is what they say:
- The UK Foreign Office (page updated 29 September 2026) advises keeping valuables away from the beach and not using your phone in the street, especially between 16:00 and 21:00.
- The FCDO and the US State Department (Brazil at Level 2, Exercise increased caution, 31 August 2026) both advise staying off city beaches after dark.
- In an emergency call 190 (police), 192 (ambulance) or 193 (fire brigade).
We look at the exact street as well as the area. More: Rio safety tips.
New Year’s Eve and Carnival
The next New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2026, is celebrated on Copacabana beach. If you stay in Copacabana or Leme you walk to it. For the last edition the city closed Avenida Atlântica at 7:00 on 31 December and every access to Copacabana to all vehicles from 21:00, reopening at 5:00 on 1 January. How the night works: New Year’s Eve in Rio.
The Special Group nights at the Sambadrome are 7, 8 and 9 February 2027 (LIESA). On parade nights even-numbered sectors use Praça Onze station and odd-numbered sectors Central do Brasil, both on line 1. That makes Copacabana, Ipanema near General Osório, Botafogo, Flamengo or the center practical for Carnival. Tickets and sectors: Rio Carnival.
