Day trips
Niterói from Rio: half a day or a full day
Niterói sits across Guanabara Bay from Rio: the ferry from Praça XV takes up to 22 minutes, and the bridge route crosses 13.2 km of the Rio-Niterói Bridge. People go for Oscar Niemeyer's MAC museum, the view of Rio across the bay, the Santa Cruz fort and the ocean beaches. We plan the day with a private driver or a guide and fit it to opening hours.

The MAC museum
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói (MAC), designed by Oscar Niemeyer, stands on a point over the bay, and from it you look across the water to Rio. According to the city hall, it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30, and tickets are sold at the box office for cash only. Until 22 November 2026 the museum runs three exhibitions for its 30th anniversary. The city has also announced a large maintenance project for the building without publishing dates, so we check that the museum is open on your day.
Santa Cruz fort
The Fortaleza de Santa Cruz guards the entrance to Guanabara Bay. According to the Brazilian Navy’s heritage directorate, Villegagnon set up a makeshift fortification here in 1555, and Mem de Sá took and enlarged it in 1557. The fort later served as a political prison and fired its last shot in 1955. Inside is the 18th-century Santa Bárbara chapel. Visiting days and access are set by the fort, and we confirm them for your date.
Ocean beaches and the Costão trail
On the ocean side, Itacoatiara and Itaipu make a beach day. Above Itacoatiara, the Costão trail climbs in the Serra da Tiririca State Park, created in 1991. INEA, the state environment agency, asks hikers to sign the visitor book at the Itacoatiara reception post and to stay on marked trails; groups of 10 or more notify the park 10 days ahead. We book a guide for the trail.
Niterói from Rio: ferry or car
- Ferry: Barcas Rio runs from Praça XV in central Rio to Praça Arariboia in central Niterói, up to 22 minutes. On Saturdays boats leave every 30 minutes, on Sundays and holidays every hour, and more often on weekdays.
- Car: across the Rio-Niterói Bridge; the operator Ecovias Ponte manages 13.2 km of it. Rush hour slows it down, so we leave with time to spare.
- With a private driver the museum, the fort and the beaches fit into one day, since they are far apart.
How the day can look
- Half a day: the Niemeyer buildings, the MAC, a sunset over the bay and dinner.
- Full day: the MAC, Santa Cruz fort and a viewpoint, ending with the sunset.
- Ocean day: the Costão trail with a guide in the morning, then Itacoatiara and Itaipu.
The museum lets visitors in only until 17:30, so we go inside during the day and watch the sunset by the water. For more ideas see day trips from Rio or a private tour of Rio.

Our fee is already included in the price. Museum and fort tickets are paid as set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm. You can cancel at no cost up to 48 hours before. When is the MAC museum open?
Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30, according to the Niterói city hall. It is closed on Mondays, and tickets are sold at the museum box office for cash only.
How do we get from Rio to Niterói?
By the Barcas Rio ferry from Praça XV in central Rio to Praça Arariboia, up to 22 minutes, or by car over the Rio-Niterói Bridge. A car with a driver is easiest, because the sights are spread across the city.
What fits into half a day?
The Niemeyer buildings in the centre, the MAC museum and a sunset over the bay. The fort and the ocean beaches need a full day.
Can we hike the Costão trail at Itacoatiara?
Yes, it is a trail of the Serra da Tiririca State Park. INEA asks hikers to sign the visitor book at the Itacoatiara reception post, and groups of 10 or more must notify the park 10 days ahead.
Do we pay anything before we confirm?
No. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal, and you pay nothing before you confirm.
