Pedra do Telégrafo in Rio de Janeiro
Pedra do Telégrafo is a rock in Barra de Guaratiba, in the west of Rio, inside the state-run Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca. The park's managing body, INEA, has said that no paid service, photography included, is authorized at the site or in the park. So we do not offer a guide or photographer on this trail; we help you plan the day and can arrange a car to the area.

What Pedra do Telégrafo is
Pedra do Telégrafo is a rock above Barra de Guaratiba, in the far west of Rio de Janeiro. It belongs to Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca, a state park run by INEA, the state environmental institute, and not to Tijuca National Park, where the other peaks on our list sit.
We looked for an official INEA page with the trailhead, length, time, difficulty and hours of this trail and did not find one. We do not repeat figures from blogs or tour sellers.
The rule on paid services
In June 2025 the Rio news site Diário do Rio reported on photographers charging visitors at the rock. In the same report, INEA stated that:
- no paid service, photography included, is authorized at the site or anywhere in the park;
- the park is public and open to everyone;
- people who break the rule risk fines, seizure of equipment and arrest;
- INEA planned more rangers and signage.
Source: Diário do Rio, 15.06.2025, quoting INEA. We checked the article on 28.10.2026 and found no later INEA statement changing the rule.
What we arrange, and what we don’t
Because of that rule, we do not book a guide, photographer or any other paid service to work on the trail or anywhere in the park. If someone at the site offers you a paid photo, that is outside the rule INEA described, and we have no connection with them.
What we can do:
- Help you plan the day: when to leave your hotel, how long to allow for the drive west and what to pack.
- Arrange a car with a driver from your hotel to the area and back. The driver does not go up the trail with you or work inside the park. More on cars: private driver in Rio.
- Suggest alternatives where a guide and photographer are allowed, if you want help on the trail or professional photos.
Getting there
Barra de Guaratiba is far west of the hotel districts, so plan a long drive each way. We give you a realistic time for your date and hotel in the proposal.
Best time for photos
No official source gives hours or advice on light for Pedra do Telégrafo, so we do not set a time. As general advice, check the forecast the evening before and allow for traffic on the way west.
If photos at a summit are the main goal, our sunrise and sunset photo hike takes you with a guide and a photographer to peaks where that is allowed, such as Pedra Bonita or Morro da Urca.

Closures
On 28.10.2026 we found no reported closure. INEA publishes no trail page we could check, so ask us on the eve of your trip and we look again.
