Rio de Janeiro viewpoints and where to watch the sunset

The classic sunset spot in Rio de Janeiro is the Arpoador rocks between Ipanema and Copacabana, which Riotur calls the most beautiful place to look at the sea and the sunset. For the best views over the city, go up Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar), Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado or the viewpoints of Tijuca National Park. Their hours differ: the last cable car up Sugarloaf leaves at 7:30 pm, while the Corcovado train runs until 6 pm and last access via Paineiras is at 5 pm. Check the sunset time for your date against the official hours.

Christ the Redeemer at sunset

You can only reach the statue by official transport or on foot: the road to the summit (Estrada do Redentor) is closed to private cars and motorcycles 24 hours a day. The evening hours, from official sources:

  • The Trem do Corcovado runs daily from 8 am to 6 pm, every 20 minutes. Extra departures appear in the booking calendar, and the timetable can change without notice for technical or weather reasons.
  • The official Paineiras Corcovado vans leave every hour, and each boarding point keeps its own hours, so check yours when you book. The operator gives 5 pm as the last access via Paineiras.
  • Neither the train nor the van operator publishes a time for the last trip down.
  • The escalators at the statue are being replaced, and the work is expected to run until late May 2027. Meanwhile only half the usual number of visitors can be at the top at once.

If you are hoping for sunset at the statue, look up the sunset time for your date in ASTRO (see below) and compare it with the last departure and last access. Tickets, ways up and the rules at the top are on our page about Christ the Redeemer.

Sugarloaf Mountain at sunset

The Bondinho park opens Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 9 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 am to 9 pm. According to the park’s help centre, the last cable car up leaves at 7:30 pm every day.

  • There is no separate sunset ticket. Sunset no Parque, with DJs in the Jardim dos Discos on Morro da Urca, is included in the standard ticket. The park posts the program at the start of each month and cancels it when it rains.
  • Tickets are sold for a date and a time slot, and each slot has a limited number of places. Demand peaks between 3 pm and 6 pm, when there can be queues to board and tickets for those hours sell out fast.
  • If a slot is sold out online, the ticket office will not have it either. The park advises buying ahead on the official site.
  • Your slot only sets your entry time. Once inside you can stay as long as you like while the park is open, but the ticket is good for one entry, so leaving the park means you cannot get back in on it.
  • The park stays open in the rain, but strong wind, storms or lightning can pause the cable car.

Tijuca National Park: viewpoint hours and rules

Dona Marta, Vista Chinesa, Mesa do Imperador and Pedra Bonita are all inside Tijuca National Park (Parque Nacional da Tijuca), run by the federal agency ICMBio. The park’s rules:

  • Cars and motorcycles may enter from 8 am to 5 pm, with a daily cap on cars. All visitors must leave the park by 6 pm.
  • Dona Marta, Vista Chinesa and Mesa do Imperador are open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Overnight stays at Dona Marta are not allowed.
  • Estrada Dona Castorina, the road with Vista Chinesa and Mesa do Imperador, is closed to cars from 7 to 9 am on weekdays and from 7 am to 7 pm on weekends and holidays. From Horto, where bus 409 ends, you continue only on foot or by bike.
  • Pedra Bonita: start the trail by 4 pm and leave through the park post by 5 pm (6 pm in summer). The top is about 20 minutes’ walk, the trailhead parking takes 24 cars, and pets and overnight stays are not allowed. Pedra Bonita also has one of Rio’s best-known ramps for hang gliding and paragliding, run together with the Associação Brasileira de Voo Livre.
  • Pedra da Gávea: you must start the climb by 2 pm.
  • The road to the top of Corcovado is closed to private cars and motorcycles at all hours.

When weather closes the park, ICMBio posts it in the news section of the park website and on its Instagram, @parquenacionaldatijuca. The viewpoints close at 5 pm, so compare that with the sunset time for your date. To combine the viewpoints with the forest and its waterfall in one day, see Tijuca Forest.

Sunset by the sea: Arpoador, Leblon and Niterói

Riotur calls the Arpoador rocks, between Ipanema and Copacabana, the most beautiful place to look at the sea and the sunset. Visit Rio adds that an easy path leads onto the rock and that people here applaud as the sun goes down. Neither says what time that will be. Since January 2026 the city opens the rock from 4 am to 9 pm. The beach and the neighbourhood next door: Ipanema.

Mirante do Leblon sits at the end of Leblon beach, where the road climbs to Vidigal, and Riotur covers it on its Leblon page. It is not part of Tijuca National Park, and Riotur gives no opening hours.

For a view of Rio from across Guanabara Bay, go to the Contemporary Art Museum in Niterói. The city of Niterói says MAC opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, with last entry at 5:30 pm. Until 22 November 2026 it is showing exhibitions for its 30th anniversary: “MAC Monumental”, “MAC para Crianças” and “MAC Panorama”. The city has also announced major maintenance work on the building without giving dates, so check that the museum is open before you go. How to spend a day over there: Niterói from Rio.

What time is sunset in Rio?

The official source is ASTRO, an online tool from Brazil’s Observatório Nacional. Its “Nascer, Passagem Meridiana e Ocaso do Sol” calculation gives sunrise and sunset for the observer’s coordinates. Enter your date and location, then compare the result with the hours in the table: the last car up Sugarloaf, the last access to Christ the Redeemer, closing time at the Tijuca viewpoints.

Clouds can hide both the view and the sunset. To see the sky over the city on the day, use our Rio live cams page.

Sunset from the water or the air

The viewpoints on land close at set times, but you can also catch the sunset another way:

  • By boat: a private yacht with a skipper on Guanabara Bay or along the beaches, with the departure time set from the sunset on your date. See yacht charter in Rio.
  • By helicopter: a flight over the city late in the day. Whether it can fly at the time you want, we confirm with the company and put it in the proposal: helicopter tours in Rio.
  • On land: a private driver, a viewpoint or a beach for sunset, then dinner. We set the order and timing around the sunset and the opening hours.

How we help. We plan a sunset evening for you: the car, the viewpoint, a yacht or helicopter, and dinner, checked against the opening hours and the sunset time for your date. Price on request, proposal within 24 hours.
