What Florianópolis is like
The Santa Catarina state government calls Florianópolis one of the main tourist destinations in Brazil, with beaches for people who want a busy, urban scene and others for those who want calm in smaller communities. Locals shorten the name to Floripa, and you will see it everywhere, including in the airport’s name.
The city is split into 18 districts. The historic centre, the beaches and the airport are on Santa Catarina Island, and a smaller part of the city is on the mainland. Districts such as Lagoa da Conceição, Barra da Lagoa, Campeche, Canasvieiras, Ingleses, Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha each feel like a separate place, and distances on the island add up. That is why we look for accommodation near the beaches you plan to use most, not just “in Florianópolis”.
Florianópolis beaches and districts
The island has beaches on every side, and the choice depends on what you want from the day: surf, calm water for children, seafood, or a walk around the lagoon. Instead of listing a fixed “top ten”, we ask how you like to spend a beach day and match the district to that. For beach regions elsewhere in the country, see beach holidays in Brazil and Brazil islands.
The Hercílio Luz bridge
The Hercílio Luz suspension bridge is 821 m long and opened on 13 May 1926, so it turned 100 in 2026. It linked the island with the mainland and was the main connection between them for decades; at its opening it was described as the largest suspension bridge in the world. After a long restoration that replaced about 40% of its metal structure, it reopened to traffic in December 2019. The state legislature calls it the symbol of Santa Catarina and Florianópolis’s main postcard.
Oysters
Santa Catarina produces almost all of Brazil’s farmed molluscs: in 2016 the state accounted for 97.9%, or 20,828 tonnes, according to IBGE. IBGE also names Florianópolis the largest oyster producer in the country. Oyster farms are inside the city limits, so a seafood lunch close to where the oysters are grown is easy to fit into a day. Weather in Florianópolis by month
The state government describes Santa Catarina’s climate as humid subtropical, with four well-defined seasons and rain spread through the year. INMET normals for Florianópolis, published through the World Meteorological Organization:

- April and May are still mild, with fewer rainy days.
- June to August is cool for the beach. Bring a warm layer for the evenings and spend more time in the centre, at the bridge and around the oyster farms.
- September to November warms up again, reaching about 25 °C by November.

Getting there and around
Florianópolis International Airport is on the south side of the island, about 12 km from downtown. The airport lists city buses run by the accredited operator, ride-hailing with marked pickup points and a 24-hour taxi rank. With luggage and more than one beach on the plan, a transfer on arrival and a driver for day trips are usually simpler; we check flights from Rio for your dates.
Florianópolis also fits a southern route with Curitiba and Iguazu Falls. Our two-week Brazil itinerary shows how we connect regions.
