Manaus, the usual way into the Amazon

For an Amazon trip of a few days, Manaus is the easiest base. Embratur, Brazil’s tourism board, describes its port as the largest floating port in the world. The city runs on UTC minus 4, so set your watch back an hour when you land from Rio. Power sockets are 110 V (Embratur).

Teatro Amazonas

The opera house on Largo de São Sebastião opened on 31 December 1896. According to the Amazonas state culture secretariat, most materials came from Europe: steel for the walls from Glasgow, Carrara marble and 198 chandeliers from Italy, and the 36,000 pieces of the dome from Alsace. The main hall seats 684. In 2026 UNESCO added the theatre and Largo de São Sebastião to the World Heritage List as part of “Amazonia Theaters”, together with Theatro da Paz and Praça da República in Belém.

Guided visits run Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, and on Sundays and holidays from 9 am to 1 pm.

The Meeting of the Waters

Near Manaus the dark Rio Negro meets the muddy Solimões, and the two colours run side by side for a stretch before mixing. You see it from a boat. With a spare day in town, Embratur suggests the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market for river fish and forest fruit, Ponta Negra, a freshwater beach, and the Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden, one of the largest preserved forest fragments inside a city anywhere.

Forest and rivers around Manaus

UNESCO calls the Central Amazon Conservation Complex the largest protected area in the Amazon Basin. It lies mainly where the Negro and Solimões rivers meet and includes Jaú and Anavilhanas national parks and the Amanã and Mamirauá reserves. UNESCO lists giant arapaima, Amazonian manatee, black caiman, giant otter, two river dolphin species and 64 species of electric fish.

Anavilhanas National Park covers about 350,000 hectares on the Rio Negro (ICMBio, the federal agency for protected areas). The gateway is Novo Airão, about 184 km from Manaus by road (86 km on AM-070, then 98 km on AM-352). ICMBio gives these travel times: about 2.5 hours by shared van, about 4 hours by bus, about 9 hours on the regional boat. Most of the park is reached only by water.

In Novo Airão, river dolphins (botos) are fed at a private floating platform called Flutuante dos Botos. ICMBio describes 15-minute sessions with a short talk first; visitors may touch the dolphins only after feeding. It is a private attraction with its own admission.

High water and low water

When you plan the Amazon, look at the river before the weather. The Port of Manaus publishes the current Rio Negro level, and we check it for your dates.

High water (cheia) Low water (seca)
When ICMBio lists March to August as flood season in Anavilhanas ICMBio lists September to February as dry season
Boats water trails into the flooded igapó forest some spots are harder to reach in the lowest water
Beaches under water white sand beaches appear on islands and near Novo Airão

Because levels change from year to year, we check the river for your dates before we book a lodge or boat.

Lodge, river trip or day trips

Format How it works Suits
Day trips from Manaus boat to the Meeting of the Waters and river outings 1 to 2 days in the Amazon
Forest lodge stays in the forest with guided trails, canoe outings on side channels (igarapés), river swims 3 to 4 days or more
River trip several days on a boat along the forest and riverside villages travelers who want one base and more time on the water

Health

Brazil does not ask for a yellow fever certificate at entry, but CDC recommends the vaccine for travelers aged 9 months and older going to Amazonas. Brazil’s Ministry of Health says the standard dose should be given at least 10 days before travel, and since 2017 Brazil uses a single dose for life. The ministry also suggests seeing a doctor 4 to 8 weeks before a trip.

CDC reports malaria transmission in all areas of Amazonas. Whether you need preventive tablets, and which ones, is your doctor’s decision. Protect yourself from mosquitoes with repellent, long sleeves and nets in any case. More on vaccines and insurance: Brazil health tips.

Official travel advice

The US State Department rates Brazil at Level 2 (advisory of 31 August 2026). The UK FCDO (page updated 29 September 2026) advises against all but essential travel only on certain western river routes in Amazonas state near the borders with Colombia, Peru and Venezuela, for example the Amazon west of Codajás and the Rio Negro north or west of Barcelos. Manaus and Novo Airão are outside those areas. Emergency numbers in Brazil: 190 police, 192 ambulance, 193 fire brigade.

Combining the Amazon with Rio

Manaus works as an add-on to a Rio trip if you allow for the flight and the transfer to a lodge. One or two days cover the city and the Meeting of the Waters; for a lodge or Anavilhanas we suggest at least 3 to 4 days. For wildlife in open landscapes, compare with a Pantanal trip, and see how regions fit together in our two-week Brazil itinerary. Check entry requirements on official websites.

How we help

We put the Amazon part of your trip together: a lodge or river trip matched to your dates and the river level, a guide who speaks your language, transfers from Manaus airport and boat outings. We deal with the local providers and stay your single contact during the trip. We do not sell flights, but we plan around yours. Multi-day tours can be cancelled at no charge up to 14 days before; terms and payment are set out in the proposal, and you pay nothing before you confirm.
