The best places to propose in Rio de Janeiro

For a sunset proposal in Rio, the classic choices are the Arpoador rocks, which Riotur calls the most beautiful spot to watch the sea and the sunset, Sugarloaf with its last cable car up at 7:30 pm, or a private boat on Guanabara Bay. For more privacy, a helicopter flight, a terrace dinner or a trip to Búzios work well. We set it up with a hidden photographer, flowers and dinner, and keep it a surprise.

City view at sunset Sugarloaf: last cable car up 7:30 pm, park open until 9 pm
Most private A boat with a skipper, a helicopter flight or a private dinner
Daytime only Mirante Dona Marta (8:00-17:00), Botanical Garden, Christ the Redeemer
Out of town Búzios, best with one or two nights
Permits Not needed for a small, discreet moment in a public place; needed for a set or decorations
Weather Driest June to August; rainy season November to April; keep a backup date

How to choose

Start with two questions: do you want sunset, and how much of an audience do you mind? The viewpoints are public places shared with other visitors, and we do not arrange private access to them. A boat, a helicopter or a dinner table gives you the two of you and nobody else.

Then check the sunset time for your date. Brazil’s Observatório Nacional has an online tool, ASTRO, that calculates it, and we compare it with the last access times below.

Arpoador

Riotur calls these rocks between the Copacabana Fort and Ipanema the most beautiful spot to watch the sea and the sunset. It is the most famous sunset in Rio, which also means a crowd: people gather on the rock and applaud as the sun goes down. Since January 2026 the city opens the rock from 4 am to 9 pm.

Best for: a proposal that feels part of Rio, with a photographer shooting from a distance. Not for: anyone who wants quiet.

Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf looks over Guanabara Bay, Copacabana and Corcovado. The last cable car up leaves at 7:30 pm every day and the park stays open until 9 pm, so a sunset here works most of the year. Tickets are for a date and time slot.

For a quieter moment, the “Amanhecer” ticket takes you up for sunrise before the park opens to the public, with a saxophonist and breakfast; buy it by 17:30 the day before. The park can cancel it for weather. Commercial photography needs the park’s prior authorization, and drones and tripods are banned, so we confirm the photographer’s setup with the park in advance.

Christ the Redeemer

The statue is open while the escalators are replaced, until about the end of May 2027, with half the usual number of visitors at the top and the last 80 steps on foot. External events that need ICMBio authorization are suspended at the top during the works. The Corcovado train runs until 6 pm and the last access via Paineiras is at 5 pm, so this is a daytime or late afternoon proposal, not a sunset one. The van operator says the late afternoon light suits photos.

Mirante Dona Marta

At 360 m in Tijuca National Park, Dona Marta looks over Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay, Corcovado and the Maracanã. It is open daily from 8:00 to 17:00, so plan a daytime moment. In the park, photos during opening hours need no authorization if they do not disrupt the visit. Decorations or a set make it an event, which ICMBio must authorize at least 100 days ahead.

The Botanical Garden

For a calm, green setting by day, the Rio Botanical Garden opens Thursday to Tuesday from 8:00 to 17:00 and on Wednesday from 11:00 to 17:00. Tickets are sold online and at the gates.

A boat at sunset

A private yacht or motorboat with a skipper, just for the two of you, crossing Guanabara Bay below Sugarloaf or along Copacabana and Ipanema. We set the departure from the sunset on your date. Flowers, drinks, dinner and a photographer can come on board. We check the boat’s Navy registration, the skipper’s licence and life jackets for everyone. See yacht charter in Rio.

A helicopter flight

The aircraft is for your party only. Under ANAC rules a panoramic flight takes off and lands at the same point and flies only in visual weather conditions, so the weather decides more here than anywhere else. Our proposal lists the seats, so you know whether a photographer fits. See helicopter flights over Rio.

Búzios

If you would rather leave the city, Búzios gives you beaches and a slower pace. It makes a long day trip, so we suggest one or two nights, with a private transfer from your hotel or Galeão airport, a boat trip and a place to stay. A sunset boat or a dinner for two works here too. More in Búzios from Rio.

How we set it up

A recent request is typical: a surprise at sunset on a terrace or a boat, flowers, a hidden photographer, a microphone to record the words, dinner for two, in Rio or Búzios. Here is how we handle it:

  • Place and timing: we match the spot to the sunset time and the access hours for your date.
  • Hidden photographer: you agree the spot and a signal in advance; the photographer arrives early and stays out of sight. A short couple shoot after the yes can follow. See Rio photoshoot.
  • Flowers and dinner: a terrace table, a private room or a private chef on the boat; we agree when the flowers or dessert come out.
  • The surprise: only you deal with us, every provider knows, and we agree a cover story such as a sunset boat trip.
  • Backup: a covered place, another time of day or a second date. Alerta Rio names June to August as the driest months and November to April as the rainy season.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to propose in Rio de Janeiro at sunset?

Arpoador, which Riotur calls the most beautiful spot to watch the sea and the sunset, Sugarloaf (last cable car up at 7:30 pm, park open until 9 pm), or a private boat timed to the sunset on your date.

Can I propose at Christ the Redeemer at sunset?

It depends on the official hours: the Corcovado train runs until 6 pm and last access via Paineiras is at 5 pm. The escalator works run until about the end of May 2027, and external events needing ICMBio authorization are suspended at the top meanwhile.

Do I need a permit to propose in a public place in Rio?

Under the city's rules, a small photo session in a public place needs no events permit if it blocks no traffic or pedestrians, sets up no equipment and seats no spectators. Decorations or a set turn it into an event that needs authorization.

Can the photographer stay hidden?

Yes. You agree the spot and a signal in advance; the photographer arrives early and stays out of sight until you give it.

What if it rains on the day?

We agree a backup in advance: a covered place, another time of day or a second date. Keep a second date open rather than your last day in Rio.

Can we propose in Búzios instead of Rio?

Yes. Búzios makes a long day trip from Rio, so we suggest one or two nights, with a private transfer, a boat trip and a hotel.
