Leblon is first of all a residential district. Visitors who stay here usually want a calmer base than Copacabana, with the beach, the lagoon and good restaurants within walking distance.
Where Leblon is
Riotur gives Ipanema Beach 2 km, from Arpoador to Jardim de Alah, and Leblon starts there. Jardim de Alah is a canal with a park on both banks between the two districts. To the west the beach ends at Avenida Niemeyer, at the foot of the road up to Vidigal, and behind the district lies Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.
Leblon beach: quieter than Ipanema
Riotur calls Leblon beach ‘a irmã mais sossegada de Ipanema’, the quieter sister of Ipanema. People play volleyball and futevôlei on the sand, and Riotur mentions stylish kiosks and bars along the seafront. It also notes that young people stroll the promenade here and set the city’s beach fashion.
Families come every day, according to Riotur, and children have their own area on the sand, known as Baixo Bebê. If you travel with kids, our Rio family trip page has more ideas.
As on the rest of the coast, numbered lifeguard posts line the beach, and a post number is the easiest meeting point. This is still the open ocean: Rio state firefighters ask swimmers to stay near a lifeguard post, never to go in under a red flag, to skip alcohol before swimming, to keep away from the rocks and not to swim at night. The UK FCDO adds that strong currents can be a danger off some beaches. To compare beaches across the city, see Rio beaches.
Leblon lookout: Mirante do Leblon
The Mirante do Leblon is at the end of the beach, at the start of Avenida Niemeyer. Visit Rio says it is not high, yet it overlooks the Leblon, Ipanema and São Conrado shorelines, and on a clear day you can see Christ the Redeemer behind them. Riotur adds Pedra da Gávea to the view. Visit Rio recommends it to anyone who wants a panorama without a hike. It is a short walk from the end of the beach and a good stop at the end of the day.
Rua Dias Ferreira: eating out in Leblon
In the evening Leblon goes to Rua Dias Ferreira. Visit Rio lists Brazilian, Japanese, Italian and French cooking there, along with Mediterranean places and Portuguese and Spanish style bars. Municipal Law No. 6,936, signed in June 2021, made the street a gastronomic hub of Rio (Polo Gastronômico). The first Japanese restaurant in the South Zone opened on this street in September 1986. Dias Ferreira links Leblon with neighbouring Gávea via Avenida Bartolomeu Mitre, close to Antero de Quental metro station.
Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva, one of the district’s main streets, passes both metro stations, and the station exits open onto it.
The lagoon side
Leblon reaches Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas on its inland side, so you can swim in the ocean in the morning and walk by the water in the evening. MetrôRio gives the lagoon’s cycle path as 7.8 km, with kiosks along the shore.
How to get there
| Station | Line | Exits |
|---|---|---|
| Jardim de Alah / Leblon | 4 | A: corner of Avenida Borges de Medeiros and Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva; B: Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva near Rua Almirante Pereira Guimarães |
| Antero de Quental / Leblon | 4 | both on Praça Antero de Quental at Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva: A on the Bartolomeu Mitre side, B on the General Urquiza side |
Leblon has no Line 1 station of its own. In MetrôRio’s timetable, though, Lines 1 and 4 run as a single route, Line 1/4, from Uruguai in Tijuca to Jardim Oceânico in Barra da Tijuca. From Copacabana or the centre you ride towards Barra. The centre and the Sambadrome are farther from here than from Copacabana.
The metro runs Monday to Saturday from 5:00 to midnight, Sundays and holidays from 7:00 to 23:00. From the airport, the easiest way is a driver waiting in arrivals: see Rio airport transfer. Getting around the city: getting around Rio.
