Rio live cams and how to check if Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf are open today

To see whether Christ the Redeemer is visible right now, open the YouTube live stream run by Paineiras Corcovado, the operator of the official vans to the statue. When Tijuca National Park closes, trips up to the statue stop too, and ICMBio announces it in the news section of the park's website and on the park's Instagram. Hours of the vans, the Corcovado train and the Sugarloaf cable car can change with the weather: Paineiras Corcovado asks visitors to follow its official channels, Parque Bondinho advises checking its website on the day, and the train timetable can change without notice.

Price on request, proposal within 24 hours.

ICMBio, the federal agency that manages the park, decides whether to close Tijuca National Park and stop trips up to the statue. It acts on warnings from the city’s Centro de Operações Rio and from Defesa Civil. Before you set off, ICMBio suggests checking the Instagram accounts of the park, Paineiras Corcovado and Trem do Corcovado.

How to get up to the statue and to Sugarloaf is on our Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain pages. Viewpoints and trails in the park are on the Tijuca Forest page.

Weather and alerts

Defesa Civil, Brazil’s civil defence, sends warnings in several ways:

  • Text message: send the CEP (postcode) of the area you want to follow to 40199.
  • WhatsApp on (61) 2034-4611, or the “Defesa Civil Alertas” channel on Telegram.
  • Defesa Civil Alerta emergency warnings reach phones on their own, with no sign-up. The phone has to be on a 4G or 5G mobile network: the alerts do not come through Wi-Fi.

The city has its own system, run by Centro de Operações Rio (COR):

  • Rio has 5 operational stages, from 1 (normal) to 5. COR explains the stages and publishes the Sistema Alerta Rio forecast and news on road closures at cor.rio.
  • The COR Rio app is available for Android and iOS. On social media COR is @OperacoesRio.
  • The city also uses 5 heat levels: level 4 covers 40-44 °C and level 5 anything above 44 °C. At these levels the city opens cooling points and may move outdoor events. Details are on the Níveis de calor page.

For conditions month by month, see Rio weather.

If it is closed, raining or in cloud

What the official ticket rules say:

  • Paineiras Corcovado vans: tickets are not cancelled or refunded because of rain or poor visibility. You can move the date and time once if there is space, and cancel an online purchase within 7 days as long as the tickets have not been collected at the ticket office. In force majeure or dangerous weather the operator may relax the rules case by case.
  • Trem do Corcovado train: more than 48 hours before the visit you can change or cancel a ticket, and closer to the date a service fee applies. A ticket can be moved only once, and after the visit time it can no longer be changed. If the operator cancels the trip itself (technical problems, force majeure), other terms apply, set out on its “Remarcação e cancelamento” page.
  • Parque Bondinho cable car: the park runs as usual in the rain. If the cars stop for wind or lightning, you can reschedule once, subject to availability. If your visit falls through because the park closes in an emergency, ask the help centre for a live agent, who will look at your case. Otherwise you can reschedule up to the start of your time slot if there is space (within 24 hours, only once). Cancel more than 24 hours ahead and you get a full refund; later, part of the amount is kept, and once your slot has started there is no change or refund.
  • Stair lifts at Christ the Redeemer: while the escalators are being replaced (the work is expected to end in late May 2027), visitors with reduced mobility can use stair-climbing lifts, which do not run in the rain.

Tickets bought through an agency or a booking platform may follow that seller’s rules.

How we plan around the weather. If weather cancels a tour, we move it to a new date or refund the deposit in full. On multi-day plans we keep a spare day, so Corcovado and Sugarloaf can move to a clear morning without upsetting the rest of the trip.

Sunset times

The ASTRO service of Brazil’s National Observatory (Observatório Nacional) works out sunrise and sunset times for Rio. Use its “Nascer, Passagem Meridiana e Ocaso do Sol” calculation and enter the coordinates and the date: ASTRO. We do not publish our own times.

The Sugarloaf park, Parque Bondinho, opens Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 9 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 am to 9 pm, and the last car up leaves at 7:30 pm every day. There is no separate sunset ticket: the park’s Sunset no Parque programme, with DJs on Morro da Urca, is part of the standard ticket. The schedule comes out at the start of each month, and the event is called off in the rain. Demand peaks between 3 pm and 6 pm, so expect queues to board, and tickets for those time slots sell out fast.

Where to watch the sunset: Rio viewpoints and sunset spots.

How we can help

We include Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf in a private tour of Rio with a driver and a guide who speaks your language. We time the visits by the forecast and check the official channels on the morning of the trip. Write to us with your dates, how many of you are travelling and what you want to see.
