Sample program
New Year's Eve in Rio: a 4-night sample program for groups
A four-night New Year's Eve program in Rio de Janeiro for groups from about 10 people, December 29 to January 2: arrival, a city day with Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, a free December 31 before the night on Copacabana, and a slow January 1. Travel agencies can quote it as it is; we adapt it to the group and send a priced proposal within 24 hours.
Updated:
The program at a glance
| Day | Date | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | December 29 | Arrival, transfer, welcome dinner |
| 2 | December 30 | Christ the Redeemer, then Sugarloaf |
| 3 | December 31 (Thursday) | Free day, then the night: beach, booked party or boat |
| 4 | January 1 (Friday, national holiday) | Late start, beach, group lunch |
| 5 | January 2 | Transfers to the airport |
We shift the days to your flights. The one arrival day we avoid is December 31: last time, charter vehicles could not enter Copacabana and Leme that day.
Facts for planners
As of October 9, 2026, the city had not announced the stages, artists or traffic plan for 2026/27. ABIH-RJ, the state hotel association, says these announcements tend to come in the last quarter of the year. The logistics on this page follow last year’s rules; when the new plan is out, we update the program and agree any change with you first.
| Figure | |
|---|---|
| December 31, 2026 | Thursday; January 1, 2027 is a national holiday (Friday) |
| People on Copacabana last time | 2.6 million (Prefeitura do Rio); more than 5.1 million across 13 stages in the city |
| Hotel occupancy last time, December 31 to January 3 | 87.01% city average, 91.83% in Copacabana and Leme (HotéisRIO) |
| Last year’s announcements | Program on December 4, metro pass sales on December 15, traffic plan on December 26 |
Day 1, December 29: arrival
A driver meets the group in arrivals at Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU) with a sign showing the group or agency name. People on different flights get separate transfers. Where we can, we book a hotel in Copacabana or Leme, so that on December 31 everyone walks to the beach and back. The evening ends with a welcome dinner.
Day 2, December 30: Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf
The coach cannot reach Christ the Redeemer: on the Tijuca National Park road, only the official vans may drive up to the monument. The group boards them at Praça do Lido in Copacabana or Largo do Machado (7:00-16:00), or takes the Corcovado train from Rua Cosme Velho 513 (8:00-18:00, every 20 minutes, check-in 40 minutes ahead). Both run on booked time slots.
Until about the end of May 2027, the monument’s escalators are being replaced and the park has halved the number of visitors allowed at the top at one time. The last 80 stone steps are climbed on foot; stair-climbing chairs for people with reduced mobility do not run in the rain. We book the slot as soon as you confirm and ask in advance who may need a chair.
After lunch, the Sugarloaf cable car climbs from Praia Vermelha in Urca in two stages, to Morro da Urca and then to the top. It runs every day and in the rain, though wind or lightning can pause it. Last boarding varies by weekday, so we confirm it for December 30. Last time, parking was banned on Avenida Atlântica and its access streets from 6:00 that day, so we fix pickup points with the driver.
Day 3, December 31: a slow day and the night
The day is free for a late breakfast and some time at the pool or on the beach before a long night. On Copacabana, people dress in white and jump seven waves and make wishes. Both customs come from followers of Umbanda, an Afro-Brazilian religion, who in the early 1950s began gathering on the beach in white with offerings to Iemanjá, the orixá of the sea. We remind the group to pack something white.
For the night, the group picks one option or splits between them.
| Option | How it works | Last time |
|---|---|---|
| On the sand | Free concerts and fireworks, security checks at the entry points | Stages from 18:00; 12 minutes of fireworks from 19 barges, plus 1,200 drones |
| Booked party | A beach kiosk party, or dinner at a hotel or restaurant | Kiosk parties: entry from R$150; with an open bar, R$950 to R$1,400 (Riotur) |
| Boat | Fireworks from the sea on a vessel inspected by the Capitania dos Portos | Zone around the fireworks barges closed 18:00-02:00 except to authorized vessels |
The Copacabana Palace has announced its 2026/27 party, and Visit Rio’s July 2026 guide to private parties lists more, including a schooner with a view of the fireworks. The Capitania dos Portos, the Navy’s port authority, checks each boat’s documents, safety gear and capacity, and skippers take a breathalyzer test on December 31; we book only boats that passed. Prices for 2026/27 come in the proposal.
Getting there and back
Last time, on December 31:
- from 0:00, charter buses, minibuses and vans could not enter or park in Copacabana and Leme; tourist buses could park for up to 4 hours in a bay on Avenida Pasteur;
- from 7:00, Avenida Atlântica was closed along its whole length;
- from 19:00, only buses and taxis could enter Copacabana, and from 21:00 to 5:00 all vehicles were kept out;
- from 19:00 to 5:00, the metro took only a special pass (R$15 round trip, outbound slots from 19:00 to 23:00, up to 10 per purchase, online only from December 22, sales closing at 18:00 on December 31 or when sold out), with a wristband for the return between 0:00 and 5:00.
With a hotel in Copacabana or Leme, the group walks there and back. From elsewhere, we buy metro passes for one slot in several purchases, or the coach stops outside the closed area and a guide walks the group in. The way back runs in two or three waves, so nobody waits for the late concerts.
Day 4, January 1: recovery and the beach
January 1 is a holiday and the morning stays empty. Last time, access to Copacabana reopened at 5:00, but part of Avenida Atlântica stayed closed and the beachside lanes reopened only at 18:00. So we plan the day on foot, with the beach, a late group lunch near the hotel and a free evening.
Day 5, January 2: departure
Pickups follow each flight. Last time, some no-parking rules in Copacabana lasted until 21:00 on January 2, so we confirm a pickup point with each hotel. Groups staying longer can continue with the four-day Rio program. More about the night, safety and the history of the party is on our New Year’s Eve page.
