Rio de Janeiro in April

The heat drops a notch: the average high falls from 29.4 °C in March to 27.8 °C, and nights to about 22 °C. That still means beach weather. The UK FCDO ends the south-east rainy season in March, but INMET normals still show 137.4 mm of rain in April, more than in March, and the FCDO warns that heavy rain can come outside the rainy season. Flash floods and landslides are common in places like Rio, where mountains meet the coast.

North-east: the rainy season begins

The FCDO gives April to July as the north-east rainy season, and the numbers agree. Salvador goes from 144.6 mm in March to 321.6 mm in April, Recife gets 326.4 mm and São Luís 472.6 mm. A beach holiday in Salvador is still possible, but plan around showers.

The rain is also what fills Lençóis Maranhenses. Maranhão’s state tourism office says heavy rain runs from January to July and forms freshwater lagoons between the dunes: Lençóis Maranhenses.

Amazon and Pantanal

In Anavilhanas National Park near Manaus, ICMBio gives March to August as high water, and boat trails through the flooded igapó forest usually open from April. That makes April a good month for canoe outings in the Amazon. Manaus still averages 300.1 mm over 20 rainy days.

South and São Paulo

April is one of the drier months in São Paulo: 75.8 mm over 9 rainy days, highs around 25 °C. Good for museums, food and city walks: São Paulo trip. Florianópolis cools to a 25.4 °C high with 96.6 mm of rain, still pleasant for the beach: Florianópolis.

Events and holidays in April 2027

Dates are from the official MotoGP and Rio2C websites, federal law 662/1949 and the Rio city government. With São Jorge on a Friday, Rio gets a long weekend on 23-25 April, so we book hotels and out-of-town trips for those days early. Easter is in March in 2027 (28 March).
