Rio de Janeiro in August

In the INMET normals August is Rio’s driest month: 50.5 mm of rain over about 6 days. That makes it a good month for the outdoor sights, from Christ the Redeemer to a walk through Tijuca Forest. Days average 25.6 °C, warm enough for the beach on sunny afternoons. Visit Rio gives June to August as the period when humpback whales pass Rio: whale watching in Rio. Where to go in Brazil in August

The Pantanal remains in its dry season. Cuiabá averages 11.4 mm of rain, and ICMBio recommends May to September. Days are hot, 34.1 °C on average, with nights near 18 °C. See our Pantanal guide.

The Lençóis Maranhenses is still within Embratur’s best window of June to September for full lagoons: Lençóis Maranhenses.

The Northeast coast improves. Fortaleza averages only 31.2 mm of rain in August, and Salvador falls to 135.9 mm from over 200 mm in July. The FCDO places the Northeast rainy season from April to July, so August is the first month after it. See Salvador.

In the Amazon, August is the last month of the flood season in ICMBio’s Anavilhanas guide (March to August); the white sand beaches start to appear in the dry season from September. Manaus gets 57.9 mm of rain, about half the June amount. See the Amazon guide.

How we help you plan the month

We are Vela Brasil, a small team that plans private trips around Brazil for couples, families and friends. You tell us the dates and what you want from the trip, and we match each leg to the season: Rio first, then a region where the weather works that month. We find a guide who speaks your language, book a private driver for airport runs and day trips, and stay your single contact during the trip. For a longer route, see our two-week Brazil itinerary.

Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm. Tours, transfers and boat trips can be cancelled at no cost up to 48 hours before, multi-day tours up to 14 days before. Price on request, proposal within 24 hours.
