September is a dry month for most of the interior. Brasília gets 51.9 mm, against 172.1 mm in October. In the south the nights are cool: 13.9 °C in São Paulo and 15.1 °C in Florianópolis, so a sweater is worth packing. Salvador is warm but has the most rainy days in this table, 17 on average.
According to the UK Foreign Office, the rainy season in the south and south-east runs from November to March and in the northeast from April to July, so September falls outside both.
Rio de Janeiro in September
Rio is between seasons. Afternoons average 25 °C, nights 19.2 °C, and the month has about 9 days with some rain. Beach days are possible, though the water is cooler than in summer. Hotels and tours are easier to book than in December or Carnival, which makes September a good month for a first city trip: Sugarloaf, Corcovado, the historic centre and day trips along the coast.
See our Rio weather page for the full year and the Rio itinerary for how we split the days.
7 September: Independence Day
7 September is a national holiday under Law 662 of 1949. In 2027 it is a Tuesday, so many Brazilians take the Monday off and travel. Roads out of Rio and São Paulo, domestic flights and coastal towns get busier from Friday. If your trip includes that weekend, we book transfers and hotels earlier.
