Natal, Brazil in brief

Natal sits on the northeastern corner of Brazil, facing the Atlantic. Embratur calls it the City of the Sun because it gets more than 300 sunny days a year. Most of the visit happens along the coast: the city beaches, the dunes north of the city and the cliffs and bays to the south, all the way to Pipa.

Aluízio Alves International Airport is about 30 km from the city, so plan the transfer as part of the arrival day.

Getting around

The sights are spread along the coast, from Genipabu in the north to Pipa in the south, so a car with a driver saves the most time. A practical order is the city and the fort first, Genipabu on a separate half day, then the coast road south with a stop at Pirangi on the way to Pipa. We plan the days so you do not reach a beach at the wrong tide.

Natal beaches and Ponta Negra

Ponta Negra, about 12 km from the centre, is the best known beach in Natal and the neighbourhood where most travellers stay, with bars and restaurants along the seafront. At its southern end rises the Morro do Careca, a dune more than 100 metres high surrounded by Atlantic Forest, a regular feature of the city’s postcards. You see it from the beach and the promenade.

Forte dos Reis Magos and the historic centre

Embratur calls the Forte dos Reis Magos the city’s starting landmark. It stands at Praia do Forte, with cannons on the upper level and a chapel with a freshwater well inside. IPHAN’s work in Rio Grande do Norte began with listing the fortress in 1949, and since 1976 it has kept the Marco de Touros, a Portuguese possession marker from 1501.

The Ribeira neighbourhood is part of the listed area of Natal’s historic centre (IPHAN). A walk there fits well with the fort on the same morning. Opening hours change, so we check them for your dates.

Genipabu dunes

The Genipabu dunes are about 20 km from Natal, according to Embratur. It is the usual half day out of the city for travellers who want to see the dunes north of Natal. We book a driver and vehicle for the dunes and fit the trip around your other days.

The Pirangi cashew tree

On Pirangi do Norte beach in Parnamirim, about 12 km south of Natal, grows a cashew tree described by Embratur as one of the largest in the world. In season you can pick and eat the cashews. The stop pairs easily with the coastal road south toward Pipa.

Pipa

Pipa is in the municipality of Tibau do Sul, about 85 km from Natal (Embratur). Its stretch of coast has 11 beaches, each with its own character:

Place What it is like
Praia do Amor The roughest sea and a traditional surf spot; reached by stairs in the cliff at high tide or along the sand at low tide
Praia do Centro Natural pools at low tide and the departure point for speedboats to Baía dos Golfinhos
Baía dos Golfinhos Dolphins are common here and often jump close to visitors
Praia do Madeiro Cliffs covered in native forest and calm water for stand-up paddle
Chapadão A red cliff for sunrise and sunset
Lagoa de Guaraíras Boat trips on the lagoon, another place to see dolphins

Embratur also mentions quad bike rides at Praia do Amor, Praia do Madeiro and Cacimbinhas. Because of the tides, we time beach walks and boat trips for your dates. Dolphin sightings are frequent, never guaranteed.

When to go

Embratur describes Natal as sunny almost all year, with the rainiest period from March to July. Rain in those months usually comes in spells and does not stop sightseeing. Light clothes and strong sunscreen are needed in every season. For a month by month view of the whole country, see the best time to visit Brazil.

How many days and what to combine

  • Four to five days: two nights in Ponta Negra (fort, Genipabu, Pirangi) and two or three in Pipa.
  • A week: add Recife and Olinda, the next state capital to the south. See Recife and Olinda.
  • Northeast loop: Natal, Recife and Fortaleza, or Natal with Fernando de Noronha, on a two-week Brazil itinerary. We check flights for your dates when we build the plan.

Safety and health

The UK FCDO page was current on 21.10.2026, and Canada advises a high degree of caution (updated 14.10.2026). Emergency numbers: 190 police, 192 ambulance, 193 fire brigade.
