Surf lessons in Rio de Janeiro: which beach
| Beach | Who it suits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Arpoador | Beginners and experienced surfers | About 800 m long, surfed in summer and in winter |
| Macumba | Beginners and longboarders | Full, long waves almost all year |
| Barra da Tijuca | Different levels | 14.4 km of beach with several spots |
| Prainha | Experienced surfers | Riotur calls it the surfers’ favorite beach |
Arpoador
Riotur puts Arpoador at about 800 m between Forte de Copacabana and Rua Francisco Otaviano, where Ipanema begins, and says people surf here in summer and in winter. If you stay in Ipanema or Copacabana, you can walk to the lesson. More about the area: Ipanema beach and Copacabana beach.
Macumba and Barra da Tijuca
Riotur describes Macumba’s waves as full and long almost all year and calls the beach ideal for longboarders. It is a long beach with kiosks and a bike path, and the Pontal rock separates it from Recreio. Barra da Tijuca, next door, has 14.4 km of sand for surfing, windsurfing and bodyboarding. From the South Zone you go by car, and we build the drive into the lesson time.
Prainha
Prainha sits at the end of Recreio, framed by hills of Atlantic Forest, and Riotur calls it the surfers’ favorite beach. The waves there are strong, so we don’t send first-timers. All beaches compared: Rio beaches.
Waves change from day to day. We look at the forecast with the school the day before and, if needed, move the lesson to another beach or day. Weather by month: Rio weather.
Private lesson or group
| Format | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Private lesson | First time on a board, children, nervous swimmers | The instructor watches only you |
| Lesson for your group | Family or friends at a similar level | You choose the time |
| Several lessons in a row | Catching waves on your own by the end of the trip | Beach and time follow the forecast |
Families often book a private lesson for the children and a second slot for the adults. Ideas for travelling with kids: Rio family trip.
Our fee is already included in the price.
What we check before booking a school
The city’s beachfront rules, published in May 2025, allow sports schools on the sand and promenade only with authorization from the city. We book only schools that have it. We also check:
- the instructor’s experience with beginners and children, and the language they teach in;
- insurance for students, and we suggest your travel insurance also covers surfing;
- equipment: a large, stable board for beginners, a leash, a rash guard, children’s sizes;
- how many students there are per instructor;
- that the lesson takes place near a lifeguard post and never where a red flag is up.
Nobody can promise that nothing will happen in the sea, and we don’t make that promise either. How we vet providers: how we work.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place for a first surf lesson in Rio?
Arpoador or Macumba, depending on where you stay and the forecast. Riotur describes Macumba's waves as full and long almost all year and calls the beach ideal for longboarders, and Arpoador is a short walk from Ipanema and Copacabana.
Can children take surf lessons?
Yes, as a private lesson with an instructor used to teaching children. Tell us their ages and whether they swim, and we pick the school and beach accordingly.
Do surf schools in Rio need a permit?
Yes. Under the city's beachfront rules published in May 2025, sports schools on the sand and promenade may operate only with authorization from the city. We book only schools that have it.
What happens if the waves are too big or too flat?
We check the forecast with the school the day before. If needed we move the lesson to another beach or another day, and if neither works you get a full refund of the deposit.
Do I need to bring a board?
No. The school provides a board for your level, a leash and a rash guard. We confirm what is included in the proposal.
